Students on the Higher Level Course in Power Stations and Renewable Energy at the Integrated Centre for Industrial Technology Vocational Training in León have visited the Eras de Renueva and Las Lomas transformer substations operated by i-DE, Iberdrola España's distribution company, located in the city of León.

This initiative provides a technical insight into a substation, as well as an understanding of maintenance and safety operations and work organisation, with the aim of promoting and raising awareness of the company’s activities among future professionals in the sector.

Furthermore, the visit allowed the students to hear first-hand from Gregorio Grande, head of the León–Zamora UTS, who has spent over 25 years training generations of students from León in electrical networks, operations and safety. His teaching career and commitment to technical outreach have made his sessions a benchmark for training centres and universities across the province.

Grande explained the operation of the various substation equipment, auxiliary services, control systems, protection devices and transformers, as well as all aspects related to maintenance and the environment. He also discussed with the students the identification of electrical installations, operational criteria and risk prevention, offering a practical perspective based on decades of hands-on experience.

The Eras de Renueva and Las Lomas substations bolster the city’s electricity supply through modern and efficient infrastructure. Eras de Renueva, housed in a compact building with underground cables, features a 40 MVA transformer that steps down the voltage from 132 kV to 13.8 kV and supplies around 28,000 customers in the north-west of the capital. Las Lomas, meanwhile, has two 12 MVA transformers and nine medium-voltage lines, serving approximately 20,000 customers.
