The Basque Government's Minister for Industry, Energy Transition and Sustainability, Mikel Jauregi, and Julio Castro, CEO of Iberdrola Energía Sostenible España (IESE), a company within Iberdrola España, visited the Labraza wind farm construction site this morning as the project enters its final phase. The visit was also attended by the Basque Government's Deputy Minister for Energy Transition, Irantzu Allende, together with representatives of the Basque Energy Agency (EVE).

Mikel Jauregi said: "Labraza marks a turning point. It is the first wind farm to be built in the Basque Country in the last 20 years. With an installed capacity of 40 MW, it is the first milestone in EVE's roadmap, through which we aim to deliver 450 MW of large-scale wind and solar developments by 2030. It is an investment in the future, co-financed by local people through their savings."

Julio Castro, CEO of IESE, added: "The arrival of the first turbine blades marks a key milestone in the progress of the Labraza wind farm, a strategic project that will help accelerate renewable energy development in the Basque Country. Labraza reinforces our commitment to the energy transition, delivering positive benefits for the local area while providing a significant boost for Basque industry."

Construction of the Labraza wind farm, developed by Iberdrola España and EVE, has entered a crucial stage with the arrival of the blades and other components for the eight wind turbines that will harness the power of the wind to generate renewable electricity. The project will become the first wind farm to enter operation in the Basque Country since 2006.

Construction of the renewable energy project will create up to 90 jobs, primarily for local workers, during the construction phase. Its benefits extend beyond employment, generating positive impacts for local municipalities, residents and businesses located near the renewable energy facility. Once operational, the Labraza wind farm will generate 99,679 MWh of renewable electricity each year, enough to supply 30,000 homes, while preventing the emission of 16,300 tonnes of CO₂ annually.

Additional benefits for the local área

The project developers have introduced a range of measures to benefit local residents and businesses, including reduced electricity prices for residents of Labraza and Barriobusto. Local companies will also have the opportunity to enter into power purchase agreements (PPAs), providing long-term fixed-price electricity contracts, while the project is expected to support economic growth by attracting businesses looking to accelerate their industrial decarbonisation.

In addition, the wind farm will generate around €1.2 million in revenue for local councils at the start of construction, followed by recurring annual income of approximately €230,000 through taxes and concession fees.

The project's crowdlending initiative has also proved highly successful. The financing round attracted more than twice the number of applications expected from residents of Álava, with demand exceeding €6.5 million compared with the €3 million initially offered.

The Labraza wind farm, the first wind energy project to be developed in the Basque Country in 20 years, represents a €56 million public-private investment by Iberdrola España (75%) and the Basque Energy Agency (EVE), the Basque Government's energy agency (25%). The project is one of the first initiatives to emerge from the partnership between Iberdrola España and EVE to promote the development of new renewable energy projects across the Basque Country.
