Iberdrola España installs thermal insulation in 70 homes in Binaced in Huesca at no cost to owners

  • The work on the roofs means an up to 20% decrease in fuel used for heating
  • The discounts from energy saving certificates and the creation of a group of interested residents, which allows visits to be grouped together, are key to making this possible

Iberdrola España has thermally insulated 70 homes in Binaced, Huesca at no cost to the owners thanks to the discounts from energy saving certificates and the agreement between neighbours to group together, making the project more efficient and enabling it to be carried out.

The action taken has led to a reduction in fuel consumption for heating of up to 20%, whether through diesel, gas, wood or other systems. During the summer the temperature on the upper floor of the homes has also been found to have improved, in some cases falling by up to four or five degrees.

Beyond the financial savings, greater thermal comfort and liveability were also achieved, adding real value to the property. With this commitment, Iberdrola España is positioning itself as a strategic partner in the energy transition of Spanish homes, helping to make housing more efficient.

The discount achieved by residents through the certificate system, together with the economies of scale from the residents' group, which has made it possible to maximise the efficiency of visits to homes to take measurements and carry out thermal insulation work, allows Iberdrola España to cover 100% of the cost of installation for all homes that do not have roof insulation, meaning that customers did not have to any financial outlay.

Following the project carried out in Binaced, Iberdrola España wants to extend this practice to other local councils or neighbourhood groups with at least 30 homeowners who are interested and want to take advantage of the opportunity to insulate their homes at no cost. Virtually all homes built before 1982 have no insulation, making them ideal for this system.

Joaquín Polo, Product Manager for Smart Clima at Iberdrola, stressed that the most important thing, apart from energy savings, ‘is the improvement in comfort thanks to a very simple intervention, but one that requires a prior inspection of the homes. That’s why it’s so important for several owners to join together to make it possible.’

We’re eager to replicate this initiative in other towns, so we need to bring together anyone interested, as this efficiency results in greater efficiency for residents’, said Joaquín Polo, which is why we’re in constant contact with our partner company in Aragón, X-BLOW Insulation, to find groups of customers who want to benefit from the installation at no cost to them, or neighbourhood associations/local councils that can bring together potential interested households’.

What are energy saving certificates?

Energy saving certificates are electronic documents that certify energy savings associated with energy efficiency measures, such as thermal insulation. This instrument allows customers to monetise energy savings, recovering part of the cost of investments in energy efficiency through compensation when selling the savings obtained.

The company's solution makes it possible to permanently mitigate energy losses through roofs in a single day and without the need for work on the property or applying for permits from the homeowners' association. The insulation is put in by filling with mineral glass wool to insulate the roof in the case of attics or single-family homes with false ceilings, as well as in detached homes with uninhabited under-roof spaces.

The injected material, made from recycled glass, requires no maintenance, is resistant to water, insects and rodents, improves fire protection as it is fireproof and provides uniform insulation. It also acoustically insulates the home from outside noise.

This technique currently offers the greatest energy savings for every euro invested. It is a solution that has been used for over 30 years and is well established in countries with a continental climate such as the United Kingdom, where more than 13 million homes have already been insulated using cavity wall insulation.
