i-DE, Iberdrola España's distribution company, has completed the project to compact the Valdecaballeros distribution transformer substation (STR) in the La Siberia region of Badajoz (Extremadura).

This process has enabled the modernisation and optimisation of the electrical infrastructure, replacing the conventional substation with a more compact and automated facility, thereby reducing the visual impact. It also enhances safety and improves the reliability of the electricity supply in the region.

Thanks to the new electrical substation, around 5,000 customers in Valdecaballeros and Helechosa de los Montes will benefit from a more reliable supply. Furthermore the infrastructure improves the safety and continuity of service in other localities in the area such as Guadalupe, Cañamero, Fuenlabrada de los Montes, Castilblanco, Herrera del Duque and Talarrubias.

Specifically the company has consolidated the 45 kilovolt (kV) high-voltage system and the 20 kilovolt (kV) medium-voltage system, which are now housed within prefabricated buildings, and the high- and medium-voltage line outputs have been buried underground, thereby reducing the visual impact. Furthermore these new compact facilities incorporate digital protection and remote control systems, enabling remote operation and reducing the time taken to restore the electricity supply in the event of incidents.

i-DE carried out this project over the last twelve months with an investment of €2.2 million, contributing to the revitalisation of the economy and employment in the region of Extremadura.

Furthermore i-DE reduces maintenance work and, thanks to the new integrated protection and control system, will achieve greater reliability of the installation, meeting advanced quality and environmental standards.

It should be noted that the project was carried out without affecting customers' normal electricity supply whilst work was being carried out on the electrical infrastructure.

More than 70 substations in Extremadura

In Extremadura i-DE manages over 10,600 kilometres of low and medium-voltage lines and over 2,000 kilometres of high and very high-voltage lines, as well as 3,467 operational transformer stations and 74 substations. This network serves both households and businesses across the entire autonomous community.

Thanks to these facilities i-DE now has a modern, digitalised network in the region that is ready to meet the needs and challenges posed by the electrification of the economy in Extremadura. The investment made by i-DE in the autonomous region over many years has also led to a substantial improvement in the quality of supply it offers its customers.
