Iberdrola España and the Licenciados Reunidos School in Cáceres have joined forces to launch a pioneering solar community in the city, marking a commitment to innovation and energy efficiency. This new installation is Iberdrola España's first solar community in Extremadura incorporating a battery storage system and is also the first in Spain to be built on an already existing solar community.

This improvement optimizes the use of generated energy, adapting to the hours of peak domestic consumption. Thanks to more efficient use of solar energy, families can increase their savings by relying on a local and sustainable energy source.

The installation will be located on the school's roof and is expected to prevent the emission of nearly 1,518 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere over the next 30 years.

In addition to reducing electricity costs for the school, neighbors within a 2-kilometer radius will also be able to benefit from 100% renewable self-consumption, without the need for their own infrastructure or investments.

Iberdrola España will be responsible for investing in this installation, which will consist of 393 solar panels, with a total power of 181 kilowatts (kW), enough to produce nearly 253 megawatt-hours (MWh) annually. Thanks to this solar community, around 270 families will be able to participate and save on their electricity bills by consuming a portion of the energy produced locally by the installation.

Borja Cañas, Commercial Delegate of Iberdrola España in Extremadura, emphasized that this project "allows us to continue advancing in the supply of renewable energy at zero kilometers, through an innovative solution that will help boost sustainability while allowing our customers to save." He concluded, "Thanks to this storage system, we will be able to continue using solar energy even during hours without radiation."

Leader in Self-Consumption in Spain

As part of its commitment to accelerating the energy transition, Iberdrola España not only promotes photovoltaic self-consumption by integrating it into the energy system through its networks but also leads the customer management market for this modality in the country.

The collective self-consumption solutions developed by Iberdrola España have made self-consumption available to all customers, whether they have a private roof or not. Customers in this segment also have the Solar Plan, a competitive electricity tariff for the hours when there is no sunlight, during which they need to consume energy from the grid, as they self-supply from their own installation during the day.

Self-consumption solar systems can lead to savings of 30% on the annual bill for residential communities, 50% for businesses and companies, and up to 70% for single-family homes. These savings are generated through three routes: the energy produced by the installation that the user doesn’t have to purchase, compensation for excess energy that isn’t consumed and is fed back into the grid, and savings from lower taxes.

Regarding the possibility of compensating energy fed into the grid, Iberdrola España customers benefit from the Solar Cloud service, which allows them to compensate excess energy beyond the energy term, even redirecting it for use in another home.
