WIND FARMS IN CANTABRIA

Cañoneras wind farm, the first wind farm in Spain of Iberdrola España in Cantabria

In Cantabria, onshore wind power is emerging as a promising alternative in the regional energy landscape. Efforts are focused on harnessing the prevailing north and north-easterly winds blowing from the Cantabrian Sea inland.

By the end of 2025, Iberdrola España has two wind farms in Cantabria: the Cañoneras wind farm (32.3 MW) and the new El Escudo wind farm (25.6 MW), which will involve the installation of 105 MW of installed capacity. The facility represents the commitment to onshore wind energy in the region as a renewable energy source with potential for the region's energy supply.

Cañoneras wind farm

Cañoneras, located in Soba, is the first wind farm in Cantabria. The electricity produced by this wind farm is delivered to the Ramales substation and is used by Iberdrola España., from there, is distributed efficiently. With an installed capacity of 32.3 MW, this wind farm has the capacity to supply energy to around 14,000 homes.

The construction of the wind farm was divided into two phases: in the first phase, in 2006, 21 wind turbines of 850 kW each were installed, along with the implementation of the substation, the control building and the necessary transmission infrastructure. In the second phase, in 2010, 17 wind turbines with the same rated power were installed.

The Cañoneras wind farm, with 66,000 MWh of annual production, has demonstrated that the installation of wind farms in Cantabria can be carried out respecting environmental values. The wind farm is an example of the integration of wind energy in rural areas in various meetings of the wind energy sector in Spain.

El Escudo wind farm

The El Escudo wind farm, which Iberdrola España is developing in Cantabria, reinforces the company’s commitment to strengthening wind power generation in the region. This second wind project in Cantabria will involve the installation of 105 MW of clean energy (25.60 MW of which are already operational). The facility will be capable of generating enough renewable energy to supply around 95,350 homes and avoid the emission of 45,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year.

Located in the municipalities of Campoo de Yuso, Luena, San Miguel de Aguayo and Molledo, the wind farm will comprise more than 25 state-of-the-art turbines designed to withstand the demanding weather conditions of the area. Its construction will not only contribute renewable energy to the region but also boost the local economy, creating over 200 jobs during the development phase.

El Escudo represents a key part of Iberdrola España’s efforts to diversify and expand its renewable energy infrastructure in Spain, ensuring a greener and more sustainable future for Cantabria.
