Cáceres hosted the 22nd Grids business meeting of i-DE Redes Eléctricas Inteligentes, Iberdrola's distribution company Spain. The event brought together more than 100 employees and was chaired by the i-DE’s director in the Western region, Óscar Villanueva, and the head of the Grids business in Extremadura, David Martín Arevalillo.
During the conference, the economy’s electrification was highlighted as a sustainability and efficiency strategy. Óscar Villanueva, the i-DE’s director in the Western region, stressed that ‘we have a major opportunity to industrialise the country sustainably, committing to the electrification of activities that currently depend on fossil fuels. With this transformation we can reduce emissions of polluting gases that damage the environment and accelerate climate change. Initiatives such as promoting electric vehicles or using electricity for heating in residential and industrial settings are clear examples of how we can move towards a cleaner, more efficient model that’s committed to the future of our planet.’
The fact that the energy transition offers numerous benefits for Spain and the region was also highlighted, as we have abundant natural resources like sun, wind and water, which are essential to generate clean and competitive energy. It is crucial that we take advantage of these resources through the use of renewable and storage technologies.
Under this framework, i-DE officials have stressed that all growing industries will need more electricity, which requires increased investment in grids: ‘We need to have a clear understanding of the regulations to develop a business plan that will enable us to tackle this new period (2026–2031) ambitiously. In this scenario smart grids are the backbone of the energy transition, as they integrate renewables and connect large industrial projects’.
At the meeting held in Cáceres, David Martín Arevalillo, the head of the Grids business in Extremadura, concluded by reaffirming that ‘committing to electrification and modern, resilient grids is a precondition to achieving the economy’s decarbonisation, advancing the energy transition and ensuring a sustainable, competitive and high-quality future for society’.
Extremadura has more than 10,600 km of Iberdrola España power lines
In Extremadura, i-DE manages more than 10,600 km of low and medium voltage lines and more than 2,000 km of high and very high voltage lines. It also has 3,467 transformer stations in service and 65 substations to provide the best service to both individuals and businesses.
Thanks to these facilities, i-DE now has a modern, digitised grid in the region that is ready to meet the needs and challenges posed by the economy’s electrification in Extremadura. I-DE’s investment in the autonomous community over many years has also led to a substantial improvement in the quality of supply it offers its customers.
I-DE concluded by pointing out that the electrification of consumption is an effective solution for building a more sustainable future. Committing to electricity as our main energy source is a commitment to efficiency, cost reduction and improving our quality of life.
