Iberdrola España receives the Special Mention of the 2025 Regional Environment Award
Iberdrola España has been recognised with the Special Mention of the Regional Environment Award 2025 granted by the Government of Castilla-La Mancha for its project of innovative repowering of the Isabela and Molar del Molinar wind farms, both in the province of Albacete.
The award ceremony took place at the Molina de Aragón Parador, Guadalajara in the presence of the President of the Government of Castilla-La Mancha, Emiliano García-Page, the Minister for Sustainable Development of the Government of Castilla-La Mancha, Mercedes Gómez, the Mayor of Molina de Aragón and the President of the Provincial Council of Guadalajara, among other authorities, to publicly recognise people and organisations that have excelled in their work to defend and promote the environment, as well as in the implementation of sustainable models, making a notable contribution to the conservation, protection and communication of environmental values in the region. The award was received by the head of Iberdrola Renovables in Castilla-la Mancha, Amelia Rodríguez, and the director of the wind repowering project in Albacete, Félix García Aparicio.
Repowering – a technique that replaces old turbines with more modern, efficient and powerful ones – will increase the power produced by the wind farms using fewer turbines. The number of wind turbines will go from 139 to just 22 between the two of them, with a qualitative leap in sustainability.
A commitment to Castilla-La Mancha’s sustainability and jobs
The Molar del Molinar wind farm, operational since 2001 with a capacity of 49.5 MW, will go from seventy-five 660 kW wind turbines to 11 new 4.5 MW Vestas turbine. Blades will be manufactured in Daimiel, Ciudad Real, and it will be capable of supplying clean energy to more than 29,500 homes.
The Isabela wind farm, with 48 MW of installed capacity, will replace its sixty-four 750 kW wind turbines with 11 new generation units: six 4.5 MW and five 4.2 MW. Thanks to this upgrade, it will continue to supply emissions-free electricity to some 26,000 households.
To carry out this work, Iberdrola España works with local and provincial companies and suppliers such as Grupo Marco, Tecinsa, Iprocel, Applus and Diedro, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable development and local jobs in Castilla-La Mancha.
A benchmark in Spain
The Isabela and Molar del Molinar farms not only stand out for their technological innovation but also for their positive impact on the local economy. The repowering is generating direct and indirect jobs and strengthening the supply chain and the industrial fabric of the area. The income generated by these facilities allows the municipalities of these rural areas to maintain essential public services and keep residents from having to move away.
This recognition is in addition to the Mention from the Jury of the San Juan 2024 Awards granted by the Albacete Business Federation to the Higueruela wind farms for their 25 years in operation which, together with Molar del Molinar and Isabela, form part of Iberdrola España's commitment to renewable energies in the province of Albacete, consolidating the region as a benchmark in wind energy.
The Isabela and Molar del Molinar repowering, which began in 2024 and will be completed in 2026, are financed by the Circular Repowering Programme, promoted by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge through the Spanish Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving.
Iberdrola España has been committed to clean energy in the region for more than two decades.
