New electric vehicle charging points in Murcia

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, visited the new charging stations installed on Avenida de los Pinos.

Iberdrola España launched the first charging points for electric vehicles under the contract awarded by Murcia City Council last December, under which the company will provide 190 parking spaces to charge cars in the city.

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, visited the new charging stations installed on Avenida de los Pinos, next to Iberdrola España's offices in the capital, where he was welcomed by the company's manager for Large Customers and Public Administrations in the Region of Murcia, Enrique Planells, and by the institutional representative Miguel Ángel Cerdán. The Councillor for Urban Planning, Antonio Navarro, was also in attendance.

Under the contract awarded by Murcia City Council Iberdrola España will install 98 electric vehicle charging stations, 40 of which will be fast chargers with a power output of 50 kilowatts (kW) and the rest will be semi-fast chargers (22 kW), so 190 vehicles can be charged at the same time.

José Ballesta highlighted that ‘the Murcia City Council has undertaken a number of initiatives in its firm commitment to the environment. We believe that the future of this city must be a green, shared one where we all move forward in the same direction’.

Enrique Planells applauded the Murcia City Council's commitment ‘to the ambitious plan developed to promote electric mobility in the city and through it contribute to improving air quality in cities’. Planells also said that this public–private partnership ‘allows companies to accelerate the development of a charging network that is accessible to all users and helps to encourage emissions-free transport that improves our residents’ well-being’.

All the points installed by Iberdrola are powered by 100% green energy from renewable sources with a guarantee of origin, which helps to combat climate change and transition to a fossil-fuel independent model.

Users can access the company's network through the Iberdrola public charging app, where they can view and geolocate verified information on all chargers, check their operation in real time, and reserve and pay from their mobile phones. The new 50 kW chargers will also have credit/debit card payment terminals to improve user experience.

A pioneer and leader in mobility

With more than 9,500 public charging points with 100% renewable energy guaranteed, Iberdrola España's electric mobility network is the largest in the country. In total, the company's network has more than 45,000 chargers between its public and private charging points.

The mobility plan, launched by the company in 2016, was a pioneer in its implementation. Its public infrastructure design is being developed on motorways and corridors as well as in cities and small towns with the goal of having at least one fast charging station every 50 km.
