Iberdrola España and Deusto University promote research and training in AI, quantum computing and sustainability management

  • Both institutions have formalised an alliance to develop R&D&I projects applied to the energy sector and foster young talent, thereby reinforcing their commitment to technological progress, the ecological transition and positive social impact

How can research and training address the challenges of the energy transition and environmental protection? To address this challenge, Iberdrola España and Deusto University have signed a framework collaboration agreement to promote joint initiatives in the field of knowledge generation and transfer, consolidating their shared commitment to scientific, technological and social progress.


Through this agreement, both custodian entities will drive the joint development of applied research projects at both national and international levels. Priority areas of work include the study and implementation of advanced technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, big data analysis and quantum computing, as well as key areas of business and economic management (innovation, internationalisation, risk management, finance and sustainability).

 

For Rector Juan José Etxeberria, this agreement reinforces Deusto University's commitment to placing science, technology and innovation at the service of people, justice and the sustainable development of our environment. "Collaboration with a leading company such as Iberdrola España will allow us to accelerate knowledge transfer in key areas such as Artificial Intelligence and the ecological transition, while also supporting and nurturing our students' talent through practical and dual-training models that directly connect academic activity with industrial and business operations and society's real needs", he highlighted.

 

For his part, Asís Canales, Iberdrola España's institutional delegate in the Basque Country and Director of Resources and Services at Iberdrola Group, highlighted the importance of the agreement for future generations: "The deployment of artificial intelligence in electricity networks requires talent capable of combining technological knowledge with a commitment to sustainability. Professionals specialising in data, automation, cybersecurity and systems operation will be key to converting the potential of AI into real solutions that improve the efficiency, security and resilience of the electricity system."


Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming the electricity sector, making networks more efficient, secure and sustainable. Thanks to AI, incidents can be anticipated, resources optimised and renewable energy integrated on a large scale, contributing to decarbonisation and economic development. Artificial intelligence is consolidating itself as a strategic tool to accelerate the transformation of the electricity sector. Its application in network management enables progress towards more efficient, secure and sustainable systems capable of better responding to the needs of households, businesses and public administrations.

 

Iberdrola España is aware that, through smart technologies, electricity companies can anticipate potential incidents, optimise the use of available resources and improve supply reliability. This translates into a more stable, efficient and competitive service for citizens and businesses. A clear example of this is that the company counts on its global smart grids centre, the Smart Grids Innovation Hub, in collaboration with the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, in Bilbao.


AI also plays a key role in the fight against climate change. By enabling better planning and operation of electricity systems, it helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve energy efficiency and facilitate the large-scale integration of renewable energies.


These capabilities position artificial intelligence as a decisive factor in driving an orderly energy transition, strengthening resilience against climate impacts and generating new opportunities for sustainable economic development.


The agreement also encompasses joint undergraduate final projects (TFG), master's theses (TFM), doctoral dissertations and case studies focused on the energy sector; the promotion of internships with particular emphasis on incorporating dual education that brings students closer to industry realities; the holding of training and dissemination events; and the creation of dedicated training classrooms and specific Chairs in areas of common interest with ethical or social impact.
