Iberdrola España and the University of Deusto promote research and training in AI, quantum computing and sustainability management

  • Both institutions have formalised a partnership to develop R&D&I projects applied to the energy sector and to foster young talent, thereby reinforcing their commitment to technological advancement, the green transition and positive social impact

How can research and training address the challenges of the energy transition and environmental protection? To tackle this challenge Iberdrola España and the University of Deusto have signed a framework collaboration agreement to promote joint initiatives in the field of knowledge generation and transfer, thereby consolidating their shared commitment to scientific, technological and social progress.

 

Through this agreement both organisations will promote the joint development of applied research projects at both national and international levels. Among the priority areas of work are the study and implementation of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, big data analysis and quantum computing, as well as key areas of economic and business management (innovation, internationalisation, risk management, financing and sustainability).

 

For Rector Juan José Etxeberria, this agreement reinforces the University of Deusto's commitment to placing science, technology and innovation at the service of people, justice and the sustainable development of our environment. "Collaboration with a leading company such as Iberdrola España will enable us to accelerate the transfer of knowledge in key areas such as Artificial Intelligence and the green transition whilst also supporting and fostering the talent of our students through practical and dual training models that directly link academic activity with the productive and industrial sectors and the real needs of society", he emphasised.

 

For his part, Asís Canales, Iberdrola España's institutional representative in the Basque Country and Director of Resources and Services at the Iberdrola Group, highlighted the importance of the agreement for the younger generation: "The roll-out of artificial intelligence in electrical networks requires talent capable of combining technical expertise with a commitment to sustainability. Professionals specialising in data, automation, cybersecurity and systems operation will be key to turning the potential of AI into real-world solutions that improve the efficiency, safety and resilience of the electrical network".

Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming the electricity sector, making networks more efficient, secure and sustainable. Thanks to AI it is possible to anticipate incidents, optimise resources and integrate renewable energy on a large scale, contributing to decarbonisation and economic development. Artificial intelligence is establishing itself as a strategic tool for accelerating the transformation of the electricity sector. Its application in network management enables progress towards more efficient, secure and sustainable systems, capable of responding better to the needs of households, businesses and public authorities.

 

Iberdrola España recognises that through the use of smart technologies electricity companies can anticipate potential incidents, optimise the use of available resources and improve the reliability of supply. This translates into a more stable, efficient and competitive service for the public and the business sector. A clear example of this is that the company has its global smart grids centre, the Smart Grids Innovation Hub, in Bilbao, in collaboration with the Provincial Council of Bizkaia.
 

AI also plays a key role in the fight against climate change. By facilitating better planning and operation of electrical networks, it helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve energy efficiency and facilitate the large-scale integration of renewable energy. These capabilities position artificial intelligence as a decisive factor in driving an orderly energy transition, strengthening resilience to climate impacts and generating new opportunities for sustainable economic development.
 

The agreement also covers the joint completion of Final Year Projects (TFG), Master's Theses (TFM), doctoral theses and case studies focused on the energy sector; the promotion of work placements with a particular emphasis on incorporating dual education to bring students closer to the realities of the sector; the organisation of training and outreach events; and the creation of training programmes and specific chairs in subjects of mutual interest and with ethical or social impact.
