23rd edition of i-DE's network business meeting in Valencian Community.

The Valencian Community has hosted the 23rd edition of the Networks Business Meeting organised by i-DE, Iberdrola España’s distribution company. The event brought together approximately 600 employees to analyse the future challenges facing the electricity system. Held under the slogan “The present is electric”, the meeting was coordinated by Guillermo Raga, i-DE’s Eastern Region Director.

The sessions addressed the current energy landscape, characterised by sustained global growth in electricity demand.

In this context, the Eastern Region Director—accompanied at the sessions in Alicante, Castellón and Valencia by the respective area managers—highlighted that the electrification of the economy requires redesigning systems conceived decades ago to adapt them to cities and industrial hubs that demand higher levels of flexibility, capacity and resilience.

He also emphasised that the energy transition offers major benefits both for Spain and for the Valencian Community: “We have an abundant natural resource in the sun, which is key to generating clean and competitive energy. It is essential to harness this resource by deploying renewable and storage technologies and by further developing networks to deliver this energy to end consumers,” Raga noted.

The meeting also addressed the key role of grid digitalisation, as well as the application of artificial intelligence-based tools, which will enhance service quality and strengthen the ability to anticipate and respond to incidents.

In this context, i-DE’s leadership stressed that all growing industries will require more electricity, making increased investment in networks essential. “We need to understand the new rules of the game in order to build a business plan that allows us to approach the 2026–2031 period with ambition. In this scenario, smart grids are the backbone of the energy transition: they integrate renewable energy, enable the connection of large-scale industrial projects, and facilitate electrification for sectors that have chosen to move towards decarbonisation, such as parts of the ceramics industry,” stated Guillermo Raga.

Raga concluded by reaffirming that a commitment to electrification and to modern, resilient networks is essential to achieve the decarbonisation of the economy, advance the energy transition, and ensure a sustainable, competitive and high-quality future for society.

Throughout the sessions, reference was also made to the progress of the il·lumina plan, through which Iberdrola España is investing €100 million to redesign the electricity network damaged by the storm, incorporating resilience criteria and the most advanced digitalisation standards to build the network of the future in the region.

Over 70,000 km of power lines in the Valencian Community

In the Valencian Community, i-DE manages more than 70,000 km of power lines, with 25,000 transformer stations in operation and 177 substations.

In recent years, the company has implemented an ambitious plan to digitalise its electricity networks, converting more than three million meters in the region—along with the supporting infrastructure—into smart systems with remote management, monitoring and automation capabilities.

The digitalisation of the electricity distribution network will provide greater access to data, enabling the implementation of additional energy efficiency and sustainability measures, in line with a strong commitment to ambitious and urgent climate action. The deployment of smart grids allows the network to respond to new consumption patterns while delivering improved service to the public.
