The Valencian Community has hosted the 23rd edition of the electricity networks business meeting organised by i-DE, Iberdrola España’s distribution arm, an event that brought together approximately 600 company employees to analyse the future challenges facing the electricity system. Under the slogan “The present is electric”, the meeting was coordinated by Guillermo Raga, i-DE’s director for the Eastern Region.

During the conference, the current energy landscape was discussed, characterised by sustained growth in electricity demand on a global scale.

In this context, the director of i-DE in the Eastern Region, who was accompanied at the conferences held in Alicante, Castellón and Valencia by the respective area managers, emphasised that the electrification of the economy involves redesigning systems conceived decades ago to adapt them to cities and industrial hubs that require higher levels of flexibility, capacity and resilience.

It was also highlighted that the energy transition offers significant benefits both for the country and for the Valencian Community, “as we have an abundant natural resource in the form of the sun, which is essential for generating clean and competitive energy. It is crucial to harness this resource through the deployment of renewable and storage technologies and to step up the development of new networks to deliver this energy to the end consumer,” Raga emphasised.

The conference also addressed the key role of grid digitalisation, as well as the application of artificial intelligence-based tools, which will improve service quality and strengthen the ability to anticipate and respond to incidents.

In this context, i-DE’s representatives have emphasised that all growing industries will require more electricity, making it essential to increase investment in the grid. “We need to understand the new rules of the game in order to draw up a business plan that will enable us to tackle the new 2026–2031 period with ambition. In this scenario, smart grids are the backbone of the energy transition, as they integrate renewable energy sources, enable the connection of large-scale industrial projects, and facilitate the electrification of sectors that have decided to take the step towards decarbonisation, as is the case with some tile manufacturers,” stated Guillermo Raga.

The director of i-DE concluded by reaffirming that committing to electrification and to modern, resilient grids is an essential prerequisite for achieving the decarbonisation of the economy, advancing the energy transition and ensuring a sustainable, competitive and high-quality future for society.

Throughout the conference, reference was made to the progress of the il·lumina plan, through which Iberdrola Spain is allocating €100 million to the redesign of the electricity grid damaged by the storm, incorporating resilience criteria and the most advanced digitalisation standards to build the grid of the future in the region.

Over 70,000 km of power lines in the Valencian Community

In the Valencian Community, i-DE manages over 70,000 km of power lines, with 25,000 transformer stations in operation and 177 substations.

In recent years, the company has undertaken an ambitious plan to digitise its electricity networks, converting its more than three million meters in the region and the infrastructure supporting them into smart meters, incorporating remote management, monitoring and automation capabilities.

The digitalisation of the electricity distribution network will provide more data to implement additional energy efficiency and sustainability measures, in line with a commitment to ambitious and urgent climate action. The roll-out of the smart grid enables a response to new patterns of network usage and offers a better service to the public.
