Electrification in the Basque Country

Discover how the Demelek Project is driving demand-side electrification in the Basque Country

The DEMELEK Project is exploring advanced models to forecast the evolution of electricity demand in the Basque Country. Iberdrola Clientes, a company within Iberdrola España, is participating in this project, coordinated by i-DE Redes Eléctricas Inteligentes, together with eight other Basque organisations.

Demelek will help optimize the operation of the power grid, meeting the growing demand for connections and alleviating grid congestion.

Solutions based on forward-looking models and new flexibility services for demand electrification in the Basque Country

The DEMELEK Project is developing georeferenced forward-looking models and advanced tools to anticipate the evolution of electricity demand in key sectors in the Basque Country, considering different levels of electrification and their likelihood.

Based on these models, the management of electrical network capacity will be optimised by integrating uncertainties into planning and incorporating flexibility mechanisms in high-consumption segments, with particular focus on industry, electric mobility and data processing centres.

In this way, DEMELEK will help improve the operation of electrical networks to meet connection needs arising from the growing electrification of consumption, thereby mitigating its impact on network congestion.

The project will run for approximately three years, with a launch on 8 October at Iberdrola’s Global Smart Grids Innovation Hub in Bilbao. The project is co-funded by the Basque Government through the HAZITEK programme and by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) 2021–2027.
