Siemens Gamesa and Iberdrola to commission Spain's first wind farm with the most powerful onshore wind platform

Siemens Gamesa and Iberdrola have reached a new milestone in the development of the wind industry in Spain with the signing of an agreement to install the first 5.X platform turbines, the most powerful onshore wind turbines in the world. They will therefore be Iberdrola's most powerful wind turbines at a wind farm in Spain. A single turbine from this platform will be capable of supplying green energy to around 5,000 homes.

The Iglesias wind farm will be installed in Burgos and will come into operation in early 2023.

The Iglesias wind farm, with a capacity of 94 MW, will have 14 SG 6.6-170 turbines (from the Siemens Gamesa 5.X platform, the most powerful in the world) and two SG 5.0-145 turbines (from the Siemens Gamesa 4.X platform). The 14 SG 6.6-170s have a nominal capacity of 6.0 MW and a rotor diameter of 170 metres. The wind farm is expected to be commissioned in early 2023. The agreement includes maintenance of the turbines for a period of five years.

The installation of the wind farm will have a positive impact on local activity. The nacelles will be assembled at the Siemens Gamesa plant in Agreda (Soria) and different Spanish suppliers will be in charge of producing different components, such as the wind turbine towers.

The 94 MW of clean energy produced by this wind farm will provide electricity to more than 75,000 homes, more than half the population of the province of Burgos. In addition, it will prevent the annual emission of 250,000 tonnes of CO2 per year, which is equivalent to the emissions of about 150,000 vehicles. To achieve this CO2 saving it would be necessary to plant four million trees.

With this project, Siemens Gamesa has now signed agreements for a total of 3.6 GW with the 5.X platform worldwide since its launch. The company has signed contracts to install its most powerful turbine in six countries, including Sweden, Finland, the UK, Germany, Brazil and now Spain.

Technological development, such as that offered by the Siemens Gamesa 5.X, will help drive the energy transition in Spain, which is the fifth largest country in the world in terms of installed wind power capacity, with more than 28 GW, according to the Spanish Wind Energy Association, approximately half of which corresponds to Siemens Gamesa. Spain's objectives for the coming years are ambitious: to achieve 42% of final energy use from renewables by 2030, compared to 20% in 2020, and for the presence of renewable energies in the electricity sector to reach 74%, in order to reach 100% renewable energy by 2050.
