The Oteiza Museum in Navarre to generate its own power with 72 solar panels from Iberdrola España
- The self-consumption infrastructure for the sculptor's gallery is vertically integrated into the building and will provide 39 MWh annually for own consumption
- This intervention will prevent the release of 5.6 tonnes of C0₂ into the atmosphere each year, the equivalent of planting around 293 trees

The Oteiza Museum of Navarre to generate its own power with Iberdrola España. The solar photovoltaic installation is made up of around 72 solar panels and will provide 39MWh in power annually for own consumption and a saving of around 25% on the museum's electricity consumption. It will also cover the lighting needs of all the exhibition rooms. The installation has a total power of 30kW. The solar panels were installed in an innovative way, vertically on the walls of the building designed by Sáenz de Oiza and are integrated into the building’s architecture.
With this intervention, 5.6 tonnes of CO₂ will not be released into the atmosphere. That is the equivalent of planting around 293 trees.
This infrastructure was built by Iberdrola España with its Navarrese installer ISFOT and with help from the Museum's technical team and the supervision of Marisa Sáenz Guerra, architect and member of the Oteiza Foundation's Board of Trustees.
For Eduardo Lobato, Iberdrola España's sales representative in Navarre, these projects ‘reflect the company's commitment in Navarre to local, sustainable and innovative actions, so it can supply its customers with local power’.
Gregorio Díaz Ereño, director of the Oteiza Museum, stressed that this installation ‘initiates a new programme of interventions aimed at reducing energy dependence and positioning the museum as an innovative and sustainable institution, and ensuring the transmission of Jorge Oteiza's legacy to future generations’.
Iberdrola España: leader in self-consumption in Spain
Iberdrola España leads the photovoltaic self-consumption market in Spain. As part of its commitment to accelerating the energy transition and developing new products to improve efficiency and energy savings, in 2015 the company became the first company in its industry to integrate self-consumption solutions into its range of services.
Self-consumption solar systems can save 30% on annual bills in the case of residents' associations, 50% for companies and businesses, and up to 70% in single-family homes. These savings come about in three ways: the energy the installation produces that the user doesn’t have to buy, the compensation for the surplus energy not used that is fed into the grid and savings due to lower taxes.
Iberdrola España allows energy you don’t use to be fed back into the grid in exchange for compensation through the Solar Cloud service, or even for you to divert it for consumption at another point.
The Oteiza Museum, sustainability front and centre
The installation of 72 solar panels at the Oteiza Museum represents a major step towards sustainability and is a sign of the Oteiza Museum's environmental commitment. This specific action reduces the centre's carbon footprint, for a cleaner and renewable energy model. This measure is part of a broader sustainability strategy that foresees in the near future replacing the current lighting system with LED technology. This future implementation will allow for even more efficient energy consumption, reducing costs and emissions. With these measures, the museum not only protects Jorge Oteiza's artistic legacy, but also takes on an active role protecting the natural environment, assuming its responsibility in its care.
The solar panels assembled at the Oteiza Museum received the aid contemplated in the Energy Efficiency and Circular Economy in Tourism Companies Project, under the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, financed by the European Union – NextGenerationEU.
