Iberdrola España and Tubos Reunidos Group, a group specialising in the manufacture of seamless steel tubes, have signed a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) for their production centres in Álava and Vizcaya. Under this agreement, Iberdrola España will supply a total of 120 GWh of renewable energy during the term of the contract from around 10 MW of its solar photovoltaic portfolio to support the manufacturing operations of O-Next® tubes, Tubos Reunidos' Net Zero seamless steel tube range.

This agreement underlines Iberdrola España's role in industry’s electrification, enabling Tubos Reunidos Group to continue to adopt and develop innovative and sustainable solutions for the manufacture of industrial seamless steel tubes and will enable its customers to meet their targets for reducing the carbon footprint associated with their end products.

“Iberdrola España and Tubos Reunidos Group are aligned in their joint commitment to driving a more sustainable and efficient future. Both companies play a key role in accelerating the energy transition and promoting decarbonisation in the industrial sector. Collaborations like this are essential to support the development of renewables within the electricity generation mix.”

David Martínez, Director of Iberdrola Clientes España, said, ‘Iberdrola España and Tubos Reunidos Group are aligned in their joint commitment to drive a more sustainable and efficient future. Both companies play a key role in accelerating the energy transition and promoting the decarbonisation of the industrial sector. Partnerships like this one are essential to support the growth of renewables in the electricity generation mix’.

According to Carlos López de las Heras, CEO of Tubos Reunidos Group, ‘we’re immersed in a process of continuous improvement that involves the entire organisation to make our processes and products more sustainable. With this agreement, we’re promoting our strategy to be a lever in industry’s decarbonisation, greening the value chain for companies and supporting climate neutrality’.

With this agreement, Iberdrola España and Tubos Reunidos Group consolidate their partnerships, which already included supplying clean energy with guarantees of origin. Within this strategy, Tubos Reunidos Group became the first producer in the world to manufacture a seamless tube with 0.0 CO2 emissions, of which it has already produced the first 2,000 tonnes for more than six customers in Europe and the United States.

Tubos Reunidos Group was already a low-emission manufacturer in the industry because its production technology is based on electric arc furnaces, and it continues to promote green projects and sustainability measures to advance in its decarbonisation objectives from the point of view of energy efficiency, reduction of environmental footprint and circularity, as part of its industrial and investment commitment under the company's 2021–2026 Strategic Plan. The reunification of the steel mills is of note, a move which has enabled the first phase of the pipe manufacturing process to be grouped together at a single head, with the resulting efficiencies in terms of decarbonisation, and it has launched other initiatives such as using recycled raw materials and efficiency improvements in the manufacturing process.
