Solar community in Monterrubio de la Serena (Extremadura)

Iberdrola España has developed a solar community in the municipality of Monterrubio de la Serena, Extremadura that will allow 171 families to reduce their electricity bills and access renewable self-consumption without having to have their own installation or make any kind of investment.

The Monterrubio de la Serena installation (on the roof of a business selling animal feed, seeds, phytosanitary products and agricultural products) has 193 panels with a total power of 88.8 kWp that will be used for self-consumption by the first 171 families that sign up. To sign up, you only need to be within two kilometres of the solar community and be an Iberdrola España customer.

The annual energy generated is expected to reach 130,181 MWh, is 100% sustainable and local energy, and will prevent the release of 26 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere, equivalent to planting around 1,291 trees. For Iberdrola España, the self-consumption solutions are a way of promoting sustainability while saving on electricity bills.

How to connect in Monterrubio de la Serena

Anyone interested in joining the solar communities can obtain information from their nearest service point, from the Iberdrola España website solar communities or by calling the toll-free number 900 92 33 33.

An information desk has also been set up in the municipality of Monterrubio de la Serena to answer any questions interested families might have. It has been open from Monday until today, 21 May, in the community centre, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

What's a solar community and how does it work?

Iberdrola España's solar communities are based on group self-consumption and consist of two main actors. There is the owner of the rooftop who offers unused space to place solar panels and generate 100% renewable energy to help them save on their electricity bill (in this case a business selling animal feed, seeds, phytosanitary products and agricultural products in Monterrubio).

And there are the neighbours, who must be within 2 km of this rooftop, and who take advantage of the companies’ panels’ surplus generation so that they can consume their own clean and local energy without any type of investment, installation or permanence through a subscription model, just like for any digital platform. In this case, it will allow 171 families in Monterrubio de la Serena to access solar energy solutions without installing them on their homes.

More than 20,000 families with self-consumption in Extremadura

In Extremadura, 20,000 families can now access self-consumption thanks to the solar communities installed by Iberdrola España in different parts of the region. There are now 125 Iberdrola España social communities, and Extremadura is the region that leads in the number of families that have access to them in Spain.

In addition to Monterrubio de la Serena, in the province of Badajoz there are already solar communities in the provincial capital itself, in Almendralejo, Don Benito, Villanueva de la Serena and Mérida, among other towns. In the province of Cáceres, they are present in the capital of Cáceres, Plasencia, Navalmoral, Miajadas, Coria and Almaraz, among other municipalities.
