Rehabilitation of the Cañaverosa Hydroelectric Power Plant (Murcia)
Iberdrola España is carrying out the comprehensive rehabilitation of the Cañaverosa Hydroelectric Power Plant in Murcia
The Cañaverosa Hydroelectric Power Plant project is funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU under Spain's Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, as part of the first Circular Repowering call for proposals. This programme provides investment support for the repowering of wind power facilities, the technological and environmental upgrading of small hydroelectric power plants (≤10 MW), and innovative wind turbine blade recycling facilities.

Cañaverosa Hydroelectric Power Plant

The project at the 4.44 MW Cañaverosa Hydroelectric Power Plant, located in Calasparra in the region of Murcia, consists of the rehabilitation of Generating Unit 1 and the facilities housing its main equipment. The project's objective is to improve the reliability and extend the operational life of the power plant, thereby maximising the energy output of an existing facility.
The planned works include:
- Rehabilitation of Generating Unit 1: mechanical restoration of the complete horizontal twin-runner Francis turbine assembly corresponding to Generating Unit 1, with the aim of restoring it to full operational condition and returning it to service as quickly as possible. This will enable the available water resources to be used more efficiently and consequently reduce generation losses.
- More specifically, the rehabilitation works will cover the unit bearings, turbine shaft, both runners, governor shaft, governor shaft supports, stuffing box housings, regulating arm operating lever, inner and outer turbine covers, draft tube elbow, turbine shaft coupling and other auxiliary components.
- Rehabilitation of the facilities: this will include improvements and upgrades to various elements, including enhanced site access, waterproofing of the forebay reservoir and the open chamber serving the three generating units, as well as improvements to the tunnel and tunnel entrances, together with other minor works.
