The project, known as "CH PUERTO SEGURO", is funded by the European Union — NextGenerationEU, under the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, as part of the first "Circular Repowering" call for proposals. This funding is intended for investment in the repowering of wind farms, the technological and environmental refurbishment of mini hydroelectric power stations of up to 10 megawatts and the development of innovative facilities for recycling wind turbine blades.

Puerto Seguro is a historic open-air mini-hydroelectric power station, inaugurated in 1903, with a drop of the same name measuring 88 metres. It is situated in the Duero river basin as the river flows through the town of Puerto Seguro in Salamanca, beneath a 7.7-metre-high concrete gravity dam. The installed capacity at the Puerto Seguro power station is 0.67 megawatts.

The rehabilitation project for this small hydroelectric plant involves a significant investment in the refurbishment of the canal and the mechanical components of the Puerto Seguro power station in Salamanca. The refurbishment of the 0.67 megawatts power station will enable better energy and hydraulic utilisation of the existing facility.

The works to be carried out will consist of the following:

  • Repair of the canal: the canal has been rehabilitated, involving cleaning, clearing, repair of the canal walls and bed, replacement of the drainage gates and construction of wildlife passageways.
  • Electromechanical upgrades to the generator sets and their components, specifically the refurbishment of a standby valve, the renewal of the control system, the installation of two direct current units, the refurbishment of the intake gate and the automation of the diversion gate.
