The Almaraz nuclear power station has had its operating licence extended until June 2030

The authorisation takes into account the favourable report issued by the Nuclear Safety Council, which confirms that the plant meets the necessary conditions to operate safely until that date.
It also recognises the work carried out by the team of professionals at the Almaraz nuclear power plant, as well as the ongoing investment to enhance its safety and to upgrade and modernise the facility’s technology.

The decision to keep Almaraz operational until 2030 is in line with the strategic direction set by the European Union.

The Almaraz nuclear power station, in which Iberdrola España holds a 52.7% stake (through the company Iberdrola Generación Nuclear S.A.U.), has received the ministerial order granting the facility a renewal of its operating licence until June 2030, according to the Official State Gazette (BOE) published this Friday (14 August).

The licence, granted by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITERD) in accordance with the Regulation on Nuclear and Radioactive Installations (RINR), took into account the favourable report issued on 16 July by the Nuclear Safety Council, which confirms that the facility meets the conditions to operate in complete safety until that date.

This authorisation recognises the work carried out by the team of professionals at the Almaraz nuclear power station, as well as the ongoing investment in improving its safety, upgrading and technological modernisation.

About the Almaraz Nuclear Power Station

The Almaraz Nuclear Power Station is an essential facility that supplies more than 7% of the electricity consumed in Spain — a figure equivalent to 4 million households — thanks to the work and commitment of a team of around 4,000 people who work at and for the power station within its catchment area (in addition to the 1,200 extra staff who join the team during each refuelling cycle).

With an annual investment of €50 million in the improvement, upgrading and modernisation of its equipment, the Almaraz nuclear power station is in the best technical condition to continue operating, just as the North Anna power station (Virginia, USA) — Almaraz

's 'twin' plant — is currently doing, having been granted an operating licence for 80 years.
The decision to keep Almaraz operational until 2030 is in line with the strategic approach set out by the European Union, which is committed to keeping nuclear power stations in operation to guarantee the Union's energy security and self-sufficiency by supplying the continental electrical network with a reliable and synchronous source such as nuclear energy.
