The Iberdrola Group commemorates 125 years of loyalty to its roots and social commitment in Bilbao, in the presence of the Lehendakari

The event served as a tribute to the employees, suppliers, shareholders and institutions that have made the company's century-long history possible.
During the event the company presented a book on Iberdrola's past, present and future prospects in the so-called "era de la electricidad".
The celebration will extend to the entire Bilbao community in a few weeks with a music festival and a light show open to the public.

The Iberdrola Group, of which Iberdrola España is a part, celebrated its 125 year history in Bilbao at an event honoring the people and institutions that have contributed to the company's century-long history. During the celebration, attended by the Basque President, Imanol Pradales, the company presented a commemorative book that traces the past, present and future prospects of the Iberdrola Group in the so-called "era de la electricidad," as defined by the International Energy Agency.

The book is structured into three main sections. The first section reviews the history of the Iberdrola Group from its origins in Bilbao in 1901. The second focuses on the company's profound transformation over the past 25 years, during which — thanks to investments in grids, renewables and energy storage, as well as a commitment to international expansion — the Iberdrola Group has become Europe's largest electricity company and one of the two largest in the world by market capitalization. Finally the third part looks ahead to the future of the electricity sector and the Group's role in an era characterized by the electrification of the economy.

In his remarks Iberdrola Group Executive Chairman Ignacio Galán emphasized that this publication is, above all, a tribute to those who have made the company's trajectory of growth and service to society possible. "Today's Iberdrola is the result of a collective effort, an inclusive project that has grown without ever losing its Basque roots," Galán stated.

The Deputy General of Bizkaia, Elixabete Etxanobe, emphasized that "only a society that cares for its companies, supports them and creates the conditions for them to flourish can aspire to something as extraordinary as having world champions: companies that lead strategic sectors on a global scale and drive a value chain of SMEs, startups and talent." "The Iberdrola Group is the best example of this. A local company, with its history and commitment to the future rooted in this region", she added.

For his part the Lehendakari emphasized that "the Iberdrola Group is a product of the first wave of Basque industrialization. And today, 125 years later, it is a key player in driving the Basque and European industrial and technological renaissance". "We agree on the need for a national regulatory framework that incentivizes investment in electricity grids and leverages the economic and fiscal tools offered by the EU. The present and future of our industrial employment and activity are at stake as well as the possibility of new projects coming to the Basque Country", concluded Imanol Pradales.

Other officials attended the event including the Deputy General of Bizkaia, Elixabete Etxanobe, and the Mayor of Bilbao, Juan Mari Aburto, as well as members of the Board of Directors and the management team of the Iberdrola Group and representatives of employees, retirees, suppliers, shareholders and other organizations closely linked to Iberdrola's history.

The event featured performances by the Bilbao Choral Society and the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra and Anne Igartiburu hosted it.

Celebrating 125 years of history with the public

The commemoration of the Iberdrola Group's 125-year history will also extend to society at large through a major celebration consisting of a music festival featuring nationally and internationally renowned artists open to the public, followed by a light show visible from much of the city.

These events are part of the extensive program the company is rolling out across Spain to celebrate its 125th anniversary. Under the slogan "125 Years of Light" the program includes technology and art exhibitions, music festivals, social events and the illumination of unique buildings and monuments to celebrate with the general public a history marked by a commitment to people and the company's contribution to progress through electrification.
