Iberdrola España will install two new solar communities in Ourense and Lugo that will benefit 343 families

  • Residents will be able to access the clean energy generated by the photovoltaic system and benefit from the advantages of self-consumption without the need to have their own roof or make any investments.

  • The town of Vilalba in the province of Lugo and San Cibrao das Viñas in the province of Ourense join other facilities set up by the company in different parts of the autonomous community.

  • The beneficiaries, who must live within a radius of under two kilometres from the rooftop where the solar panels are located, will see an approx. 40% drop in their electricity bill.

  •  47 tonnes of CO2 emissions will be prevented a year.

Iberdrola España will install two new solar communities in the municipalities of San Cibrao das Viñas, Ourense and Vilalba, Lugo that will give 343 new families access to self-consumption and reduce their electricity bills without having to have their own infrastructure or make any type of investment.  This modality allows users to share 100% renewable energy generated from a single photovoltaic installation located in the vicinity of their home, helping to build a more sustainable world. These solar communities will prevent the emission into the atmosphere of 47 tonnes of CO2 a year.

To qualify for this system, you must live within a radius of under two kilometres from the roof where the panels are located and have an electricity contract with the electricity company.

Iberdrola España’s solar communities are based on collective self-consumption and consist of two main actors: the owner of the roof who offers his/her unused space to install solar panels and generate renewable energy to help him/her save on his/her electricity bill, and; the neighbours, who can self-consume clean, local energy through a subscription model similar to any digital platform thanks to the roof owner's energy surplus with cancellation any time.

Lower electricity bills

This is the first infrastructure of this kind that the electricity company promotes in the province of Ourense. The plant will be located in San Cibrao das Viñas. A total of 204 panels with a power of 94 kWp will be installed, of which 13 kWp will be for consumption by the owner of the roof and 81 kWp will be used to cover the needs of 162 residents. The plan is to produce 109,840 kWh of energy annually. With this operation, in 30 years the emission of a calculated 606 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere will be prevented, or, in other words, 22 tonnes every 12 months.

The second solar community installed by Iberdrola in Lugo, in Vilalba, will be set up. A total of 251 photovoltaic panels will be installed, generating 127,050 kWh of energy a year, which 181 residents will be able to benefit from. They will have an installed power of 116 kWp, of which 25 kWp will be for the owner of the roof and the rest for the families who request it. The system will also reduce CO2emissions by 701 tonnes over 30 years.  A few months ago, the electricity company installed 194 panels in the Alma del Camino Shelter in Sarria, serving 134 families. They have a power of 89.2 kWp, generate 108,303 kWp a year and prevent the emission of 22 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year.

When the two new infrastructures are operational, the beneficiaries will see an estimated ~40% in savings on their annual electricity bills in all cases. Iberdrola has carried out projects of this kind in other parts of the region, specifically one in O Porriño and two in Moaña, Pontevedra province, one in Boiro, A Coruña, and one in Sarria, Lugo, to which the one in Vilalba is now added. With the entry of Ourense, the electricity company now has self-consumption systems of this type throughout the autonomous community. For Borja Cancela, Iberdrola España’s Sales Manager in Galicia, ‘this project reflects the company's commitment to offering residents renewable energy through innovative initiatives. In the race towards a greener and more sustainable planet, we are committed to sustainability and local engagement by making new self-consumption formats available to everyone, with savings from the first bill once the installation is up and running, and to protecting the environment’.

Pioneers of self-consumption

Starting in 2015, the electricity company was the first company in the sector to integrate self-consumption solutions into an offering that allows it to improve efficiency and savings while accelerating the energy transition. Iberdrola España leads the photovoltaic market in Spain, managing 40% of customers in this modality in the country. As part of its commitment to accelerating the energy transition and developing new products to improve efficiency and energy savings, in 2015 the company became the first company in its sector to include services of this type in its offering.

Customers in this segment also benefit from the Solar Plan, a competitive electricity rate during the hours when there is no sun, which is when they need to consume energy from the grid, as during the day they self-supply from their own installation. Self-consumption solar systems can lead to savings thanks to the energy produced by the installation that the user does not have to buy, compensation for surplus energy not consumed, which is fed into the grid, and the benefit of lower taxes. As a result of its commitment to self-consumption, Iberdrola has improved the remuneration of its customers' surpluses, and thanks to innovation in energy products, self-consumers with Iberdrola plans can price their surpluses over the unit electricity price.

Those interested in this modality can calculate the economic and environmental savings and join the solar community through the Iberdrola Solar Communities website, by visiting one of the company's service points or by calling the free telephone number 900 92 33 33.
