Students from the Higher Polytechnic School of the University of Burgos have visited the Villímar substation operated by i-DE, Iberdrola España's distribution arm, located in the neighbourhood of the same name in the city of Burgos.

The Villímar substation, part of the transmission and distribution network, has two transformers rated at 100 and 93 megavolt-amperes (MVA), which step down the extra-high voltage (220 kilovolts, kV) to high voltage (45 kV). With a total of eleven high-voltage lines, it supplies electricity to a large part of the province of Burgos and ensures a secure supply to various sectors in the north-east of the capital.

During the visit the students attended a technical session led by José Antonio Lara, head of i-DE's Burgos Technical Services Unit (UTS), in which he explained how the various pieces of equipment at the substation work — auxiliary services, control systems, protection devices and transformers — as well as the main aspects relating to maintenance and the environment.

Lara also showed the students the criteria to follow for identifying an electrical installation, its characteristics, the basic concepts of electricity, the effects of current on the human body and occupational health and safety practices.

The aim of the visit was to provide the students with a technical insight into a substation, as well as to familiarise them with maintenance and safety operations and work organisation, with a view to promoting and raising awareness of the company's activities among future professionals in the sector. The students were also able to ask questions about the operation of the facility, which is owned by Iberdrola España.
