A group of third-year Electrical Engineering students from the University of León visited the Eras de Renueva transformer substation of i-DE, Iberdrola España's distributor, located in the city of León.

Eras de Renueva, housed in a compact building designed to minimise visual impact, both due to its architecture and the fact that the electrical line entries and exits are underground, features a 40 megavolt-ampere (MVA) transformer. Its function is to convert high-voltage electricity – 132 kilovolts (kV) – to medium voltage – 13.8 kV. This transformer is capable of supplying power to 28,000 customers in the northwest of the city.

During the visit, the students received a masterclass delivered by Gregorio Grande, the head of the UTS León – Zamora unit at i-DE, who explained the operation of the various substation equipment, auxiliary services, control systems, protections, and transformers, along with aspects related to maintenance and the environment.

Grande, with the help of one of the unit’s technicians, Marcos González, showed the students at the Eras de Renueva substation how to identify an electrical installation, its topology, basic electrical concepts, the effects of electric current on the human body, and practices for occupational risk prevention.

The aim of the visit was to provide the students with a technical overview of a substation, as well as to learn about maintenance and safety operations and work organisation, with the goal of promoting and raising awareness of the company’s activities among future professionals in the sector. The students were also able to clarify any doubts about the operation of the facility, which is owned by Iberdrola España.
