Iberdrola España launches electrical safety training programme for the Civil Guard in Valladolid

The initiative aims to raise awareness among officers of electrical hazards that may not be immediately apparent to non-specialists

The Government Sub-delegate in Valladolid, Jacinto Canales; Commander José Ángel Taranilla; Iberdrola España’s delegate in Castile and León, Miguel Calvo; and the regional director of i-DE, the Iberdrola España distribution company, Óscar Villanueva, have inaugurated a technical training workshop at the company’s offices in Valladolid.

Delivered by specialists from i-DE’s technical and safety teams, the session focused on the risks associated with electrical installations and the preventive measures that should be adopted during operations carried out by the Civil Guard in emergency situations, incidents or cases involving suspected electricity theft.

The Government Sub-delegate highlighted the importance of the initiative as a tool for prevention, self-protection and operational effectiveness and thanked Iberdrola España for its commitment. “Collaboration between public institutions, the State Security Forces and the private sector is essential,” said Canales, noting that Iberdrola España has previously delivered similar training to National Police officers.

Canales also underlined Spain’s progress towards a cleaner, more sustainable and energy-independent future. “Spain is moving decisively towards a cleaner, more autonomous and sustainable energy model, and we are leading the way. Every additional megawatt of renewable energy brings us closer to the targets set out in the National Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC) 2023–2030: generating 81% of electricity from renewable sources, achieving a 48% share of renewables in final energy consumption, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 32% compared with 1990 levels, and cutting energy dependence to 50%.”

More than 30 members of the Valladolid Civil Guard Command attended the training session, which covered the identification and structure of electrical installations, basic electrical concepts, the effects of electric current on the human body, risk prevention measures, and the procedures to follow when operating in or near electrical facilities.

The workshop, organised by the Government Sub-delegation together with i-DE and Iberdrola España’s Security and Resilience area, was delivered by Adrián Carbajo and Óscar Pablos, Network Technician and Prevention Technician at i-DE, respectively, with the collaboration of Laureano Arias, Regional Head of Security in Spain. Participants also visited the Valladolid substation, accompanied by Rodrigo Sanz, a substation technician at Iberdrola España’s distribution company.

Through initiatives such as this, Iberdrola España continues to demonstrate its commitment to training, prevention and public safety, helping to ensure that members of the State Security Forces are aware of electrical hazards that may otherwise go unnoticed.

In Castile and León, i-DE once again closed the last financial year with the best electricity supply quality ratings. The company manages over 50,000 kilometres of power lines and has 15,754 transformer stations in operation and 249 substations.
