Iberdrola España strengthens its commitment to promoting gender equality through sports with the addition of Paula Leitón to its Iberdrola Ambassadors program. The center-back for the Spanish water polo team is now one of the 35 athletes and role models who work to increase the visibility and leadership of women in the sports world, and whom the company aims to give the greatest media and social media exposure possible.

At just 25 years old, Leitón has earned Olympic medals – silver in Tokyo 2020 and gold in Paris 2024 – along with numerous European and world titles, both at the national team and club levels. Leitón’s affiliation with Iberdrola España is a perfect match due to the shared values she exemplifies and that the energy company celebrates. The athlete from Terrassa will participate in campaigns and institutional actions aimed at inspiring new generations and fostering a fairer and more inclusive society.

“For female athletes, having the support of Iberdrola España is essential. Thanks to their commitment, we can keep fighting for our dreams, training, and competing at the highest level. In my case, it gives me the strength to continue promoting water polo, a sport that has given me everything, and also to advocate for body diversity in sports, because all girls should know there is a place for them, just as they are,” said Paula Leitón.

Paula now joins the Iberdrola Ambassadors family, which includes sports role models such as Carolina Marín, Alexia Putellas, Adiaratou Iglesias, Loida Zabala, María Pérez, Ana Peleteiro, and Paula Badosa, among other top national athletes.

Two decades promoting equality in Spain through sports

Iberdrola España has been the leading promoter of women’s sports since 2016. Currently, it supports more than 600,000 athletes through its sponsorship of 35 national federations and is the title sponsor of over 100 competitions. Thanks to this commitment, over the past nine years, the number of female athletes in these federations has increased by more than 80%, approaching 820,000.

The company’s support also extends to Paralympic sports. Since its inception in 2005, Iberdrola has partnered with the Spanish Paralympic Committee (CPE) through the Paralympic Support Program (ADOP) to provide athletes with the best conditions for their training and to ensure their successful participation in competitions.

Furthermore, Iberdrola España, through its Foundation and in partnership with the CPE, offers scholarships for university and postgraduate education to Paralympic athletes benefiting from the ADOP program. This collaboration aims to facilitate the professional development of athletes for their future career integration once their sports careers are over.

Finally, it’s worth mentioning that Iberdrola is one of the partner companies of Universo Mujer, a comprehensive initiative aimed at the development and evolution of women in society, launching actions that contribute to social transformation through the values of women’s sports.
