i-DE, the distribution company of Iberdrola España, has completed the full refurbishment of the Calle Ancha transformer substation. The project aims to modernise a historic piece of infrastructure and strengthen electricity distribution capacity in one of the city’s most emblematic areas.

The transformer substation is located in a space of particular heritage and urban value, as it falls within three areas of special importance and protection: the Camino de Santiago, the area around León Cathedral and the Old Town. In this context, the work involved the complete renewal of a facility that was first commissioned in the middle of the last century, adapting it to the current needs of the distribution network.

The work will improve electricity distribution capacity in the area, reaching an installed capacity of 630 kVA. This will help provide a more robust, up-to-date supply, ready to meet the present and future needs of this urban setting.

The work was carried out in parallel with the project led by León City Council to improve pedestrianisation across the Calle Ancha area and around the Cathedral. This overlap has made it possible to coordinate the modernisation of urban and energy infrastructure at a strategic point in the city.

The final result has been designed to blend respectfully into this monumental setting, so that the technical solution is also in keeping, aesthetically and in terms of heritage, with the historic and urban value of the surroundings.

With this project, i-DE reinforces its commitment to modernising the distribution network, improving the quality of supply and integrating its infrastructure into the most sensitive urban environments, while also contributing to the conservation and enhancement of León’s heritage.
