A group of students from the Salesianos Padre Aramburu Secondary School visited the Villímar transformer substation owned by i-DE, Iberdrola España's distribution company, located in the neighbourhood of the same name in the city of Burgos.

The Villímar substation, which is part of the transmission and distribution grid, has two 100 and 93 megavolt-ampere (MVA) transformers that convert very high voltage (220 kilovolts, or kV) to high voltage (45 kV). With a total of eleven high-voltage lines, it supplies electricity to a large part of the province of Burgos and guarantees secure supply to various sectors in the north-east of the capital.

During the visit, the students attended a talk given by José Antonio Lara, head of i-DE's Burgos Technical Support Unit, who explained how the substation's equipment works, including auxiliary services, control, protection and transformers, as well as all topics related to maintenance and the environment.

Lara also showed the students the criteria to follow to identify an electrical installation, its topology, basic concepts about electricity, the effects a current has on the human body and about occupational hazard prevention.

The Villímar substation supplies more than 82,000 customers in the urban and rural areas of Burgos and meets the needs of the most important industries on the Gamonal industrial estate.

The visit’s aim was to give students a technical overview of a substation and to teach them about maintenance and safety operations and how work is organised, to promote and raise awareness about the company's activities among future professionals in the industry. There was also a Q&A session about the facility’s operation, which is owned by Iberdrola España.
