The old Plenary Hall of the Segovia Town Hall hosted the presentation of the stop of the Women’s Universe Tour in Segovia, which will take place the weekend of 14 and 15 June on the esplanade of the aqueduct. It will be the 2nd city of 2025 and the 30th of this project, since this new season will open a week earlier in Guadalajara. The tour is the brain child of the Sports Council and the Youth Sports Foundation and promoted by Iberdrola España which aims to advance women's sport as a basis for the recognition of women in society, making visible the efforts, challenges and successes achieved by our female athletes over the years.

For Segovia, the arrival of the tour is a recognition of sport practiced by women in a very special year for the city as it has been recognised as 'European City of Sport 2025' and this event reinforces the programming as well as places women centre stage. The event was presided over by the Mayor of Segovia, José Mazarías, and was attended by Jesús Garrido, Councillor for Sports, Bárbara Butragueño, Deputy Director General for Women and Sport of the Sports Council, Miguel Calvo, institutional representative of Iberdrola España in Castilla and León, the tour's sponsors, the track and field athlete Idaira Prieto and the kickboxer Marta González, and the director of the Women’s Universe Tour, Rubén González.

Several representatives from the federations and clubs that will participate in this event also attended.

Miguel Calvo, Iberdrola España's representative in Castilla and León, said that ‘more than two decades ago, Iberdrola España paved the way towards clean energy and took the first steps towards a more sustainable and responsible energy model. Now, the company is also paving the way for equality through sport, becoming the main promoter of sport played by women, collaborating with a total of 35 Federations and supporting more than 800,000 athletes. Our most ambitious challenge is to introduce women's sport into homes and contribute to increasing the visibility of women who practice sport, their achievements and their way of achieving these achievements to encourage the creation of new references in society and for this the Women’s Universe Tour is the best showcase. The protagonists will be the sportswomen and women who are going to take part in the Tour, which I predict will be a great success thanks to the support and impetus of the City Council’.

Rubén González, director of the tour, gave an overview of the activities at this stop, which will start on Saturday 14 at five in the afternoon and will end on Sunday morning at two p.m.: ‘We’re proud to bring the Women’s Universe Tour to Segovia, in an event that celebrates sport, equality and the participation of the entire community. Everyone who comes down to the Plaza del Acueducto will find a way to have fun and do sport. You’ll be able to do boxing, archery, football, bowling, handball, volleyball, fencing, table tennis and local sports... as well as a great fitness marathon’.

On behalf of the female athletes who will take part in this huge celebration of sport for equality, the tour's sponsor, track and field athlete Idaira Prieto, said that ‘I’d like to thank everyone who makes the tour possible. It’s a great opportunity to promote women's sport. Sport in Segovia is alright, as we can see. I hope that women's sport continues to grow’. Marta González highlighted ‘the importance of these events for lesser-known sports, such as my discipline, kickboxing. It’s a great opportunity to promote the values of sport’.

During the weekend, the esplanade of the emblematic aqueduct will become an open-air multi-sports arena offering a sport and information space about the 35 federations promoted by Iberdrola España, where visitors can practice sports, take part in competitions and watch exhibitions with local athletes and national champions.

In addition, the event, which is designed for the enjoyment of all types of public, will have a large stage where a fitness marathon and classes will be held. Zumba queen Jessica Expósito will be one of the main attractions, with two master classes on Saturday and Sunday.

At the end of the event, Bárbara Butragueño, Miguel Calvo, Aidara Prieto and Marta González presented José Mazarías with the commemorative badge for hosting the 30th Woman Universe Tour.

Iberdrola España, a pioneer in the promotion of women’s sport

The promotion of women’s sport has become a key lever for Iberdrola España and the promotion of real equality between men and women, one of its core values. In 2016, Iberdrola España became the first company to make a firm and global commitment to equality and the empowerment of women through sport. The company currently supports 35 federations: gymnastics, triathlon, rugby, canoeing, badminton, football, handball, volleyball, hockey, golf, paddle tennis, cycling, table tennis, track and field, karate, boxing, surfing, ice sports, fencing, underwater activities, bowling, winter sports, weightlifting, judo, Olympic wrestling, mountaineering and climbing, swimming, skating, Basque handball (jai alai), rowing, squash, taekwondo, tennis, archery and sailing.

Reducing the gender gap in sport is a commitment to women's equality through excellence and translates into an important model for girls, from their practice of physical activity and sport at all levels of the education system, to show them that the path to federated and high performance sport is also one they can take.
