Second-life batteries for electric vehicles

Learn more about the SUNBATT EVO Project (SEAT), an initiative to promote static energy storage with second-life batteries for electric vehicles

The “SUNBATT EVO (SEAT)” project is funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU through the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, under the first round of the PERTE VEC programme managed by the Ministry of Industry and Tourism (MINTUR).

Proyecto PLATGESTIR

The SUNBATT EVO project will develop a static energy storage system using second-life batteries

SEAT–Volkswagen is leading the strategic initiative FUTURE: FAST FORWARD, where Iberdrola Clientes, a company that forms part of Iberdrola España, is a project partner.

This initiative aims to develop the industrial value chain of the electric vehicle in Spain, mobilising the largest industrial investment in Spain’s history with €10 billion to:

  • build the battery gigafactory in Sagunto (the first gigafactory in Spain with a production capacity of 40 GWh a year, creating more than 3,000 jobs)
  • adapt the Martorell and Pamplona plants for electric vehicle production
  • develop essential EV components and create a broad supplier ecosystem

What’s more, Iberdrola España has been selected as the preferred partner to build a dedicated photovoltaic plant to supply the estimated annual consumption of 1.5 TWh a year.

The SUNBATT EVO project is an R&D initiative to develop a static energy storage system using second-life batteries, based on system specification and field validation with high-power charging infrastructure.

In collaboration with SEAT and the INGEDETEC technology centre, Iberdrola España aims to respond to the growing demand for energy storage by helping define the system to be developed in terms of energy, power, modularity, flexibility, transportability, usability, user interaction and many other factors.

Progress has been made in areas such as the measurement of battery state of health (SOH), the development of an ageing model for the ESS and the design of the BMS.

Iberdrola España has been specifically involved in:

  • design specifications, sizing and technical capabilities of SUNBATT EVO
  • specifications for the energy management system and communications of the stationary battery
  • pilot tests in Martorelld

Objectives of the SUNBATT EVO Project (SEAT)

This project supports the goals of Future: Fast Forward and contributes to establishing Spain as a European hub for electromobility.

The ambition of SUNBATT EVO is to contribute to the growing need related to Europe’s increasing demand for energy storage, the economically and environmentally sustainable management of the rising number of electric vehicle batteries reaching end of life and the development of a circular economy throughout the electric mobility value chain.
