23rd edition of i-DE's network business meeting in Murcia

The Region of Murcia hosted the 23rd edition of the grid business meeting organised by i-DE, Iberdrola España's distribution arm, an event that brought together approximately 200 company employees to analyse the future challenges facing the electricity system. Under the slogan "El presente es eléctrico", the meeting was coordinated by Guillermo Raga, i-DE's director for the Eastern Region.

The conference addressed the current energy landscape, characterised by sustained growth in electricity demand on a global scale. "The development of data centres, the electrification of industrial processes and the advance of electric mobility are significantly increasing supply requirements, making it necessary to expand and modernise transmission and distribution networks", noted Raga.

In this context the director of i-DE in the Eastern Region, who was accompanied at the conferences held in Murcia and Cartagena by the Region Area Manager, Ángel Pallarés, emphasised that the electrification of the economy involves redesigning systems conceived decades ago to adapt them to cities and industrial hubs that require higher levels of flexibility, capacity and resilience.

Speakers also highlighted that the energy transition offers significant benefits for both the country and the Region "as we have an abundant natural resource in the form of the sun, which is essential for generating clean and competitive energy. It is crucial to harness this resource through the deployment of renewable and storage technologies and to increase the development of new networks to deliver this energy to the end consumer", Raga emphasised.

The conference also addressed the key role of grid digitalisation as well as the application of artificial intelligence-based tools, which will improve service quality and strengthen the ability to anticipate and respond to incidents.

In this context i-DE's leaders stressed that all growing industries will require more electricity, making increased investment in grids essential. "It is necessary to understand the new rules of the game in order to build a business plan that will enable us to tackle the new 2026 to 2031 period with ambition. In this scenario smart grids are the backbone of the energy transition as they integrate renewable energy and enable the connection of large-scale industrial projects", ha afirmado Guillermo Raga.

The director of i-DE concluded by reaffirming that committing to electrification and to modern, resilient networks is an essential prerequisite for decarbonising the economy, advancing the energy transition and ensuring a sustainable, competitive and high-quality future for society.

Over 30,000 kilometers of power lines in Murcia

In the Region of Murcia i-DE manages over 30,000 kilometers of power lines, has 9,700 transformer stations in operation and more than 70 substations.

In recent years the company has undertaken an ambitious plan to digitise its electricity networks, converting its more than 900,000 meters in the region and the infrastructure supporting them into smart meters, incorporating remote management, monitoring and automation capabilities.

The digitalisation of the electricity distribution network will provide more data to implement additional energy efficiency and sustainability measures, in line with a commitment to ambitious and urgent climate action. The roll-out of the smart grid enables a response to new patterns of network usage and offers a better service to the public.
