Iberdrola España obtains Spain's first certificate as a renewable hydrogen producer for its plant in Barcelona

  • The recognition certifies the company as the first to produce hydrogen from renewable energy sources, according to the regulatory standards of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge.

Iberdrola España becomes the first company in Spain to be certified as a renewable hydrogen producer at its Zona Franca Green Hydrogen Plant in Barcelona,External link, opens in new window.  for the supply of heavy mobility.

Enagás, as the entity designated by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge as the technical manager to guarantee the origin of gas from renewable sources, was responsible for granting this certificate. The initial audit for the registration of the installation was carried out by Tüv Süd Atisae, as an accredited company. 

The recognition confirms that Iberdrola España produces hydrogen External link, opens in new window. from renewable energy sources, environmentally friendly and climate neutral. Specifically, the "Renewable Hydrogen Production" seal covers the hydrogen generation, storage and marketing process, as well as the organisation's management system.

This recognition accredits that Iberdrola España complies with the European regulation established in the delegated act, using water electrolysis technology and that the electricity used for the same comes exclusively from renewable energies.

The audit verified the type of gas produced, the raw materials used and the renewable gas production technology used at Iberdrola España's facility, verifying that they meet the established sustainability requirements.

Spain's first public hydropower plant

It is the first hydrogen plant in Spain for public and commercial use to supply green hydrogen in Spain, with 100% renewable origin certification. 

This certification is the first step of green hydrogen as a solution to achieve decarbonisation of heavy transport and industrial activities.

It currently serves eight TMB (Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona) public buses, which, with a refuelling of between 30 and 37.5 kg, achieve a range of around 400 km. In addition, it is planned to expand to a total of 60 buses by 2025 or 2026.
