Iberdrola España will supply clean energy to all Alcampo stores
- The distribution company signs a Power Purchase Agreement for 3,740 GWh in the period, which is equivalent to the energy supply of more than 62,000 homes per year.
- The electricity company will provide green energy to the chain through photovoltaic installations in Spain.
Iberdrola España expands its partnerships for the decarbonisation of the Spanish economy. The Iberdrola Group's subholding company in Spain will supply green energy to all Alcampo hypermarkets and supermarkets in Spain through a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).
Iberdrola España will provide the distribution giant with 3,740 GWh of electricity – equivalent to the consumption of 62,000 Spanish families per year – through several of its photovoltaic installations for 11 years.
The energy will come mainly from the photovoltaic plant in Velilla, Palencia, which has a capacity of 350 MW; and from the Tagus I-IV photovoltaic parks in Alcántara (Cáceres), with 200 MW.
From Iberdrola España, Sergio Hernández de Deza, Director of Large Customers, PPAs and Industrial Solutions at Iberdrola España, points out: "This alliance furthers the goal of achieving the decarbonisation of industry, this time with Alcampo – one of the most important distribution chains in Spain. It is further proof that we guarantee energy security, sustainability, price stability and competitiveness through clean energy that promotes decarbonisation".
The fight against climate change has been one of Alcampo's key objectives since 2008, when it took its first steps towards the decarbonisation of its activity. Working along these lines, in 2018 it began to consume energy from 100% renewable sources in its establishments – reaching zero net emissions in scope 2 of its Carbon Footprint in 2019. Already in 2023, the company defined ambitious targets that have been approved by the SBTi, committing in scopes 1 and 2 to a 46% reduction in emissions by 2030 and achieving climate neutrality by 2043; thus aligning itself with the Paris Agreement to limiting global temperature rise to no more tha 1.5ºC. With regard to scope 3, Alcampo has set the objective of reducing CO2eq emissions due to logistics and product marketing by 25% by 2030.
Yolanda Fernandez, Director of External Communications and CSR at Alcampo, points out that: "consuming energy 100% from renewable sources is a fundamental lever in Alcampo's decarbonisation strategy. In order to achieve the goals we have set, Alcampo is committed to high-impact projects in partnership with key players such as Iberdrola España. This is the only way we will be able to make firm and rapid progress towards the 2043 horizon".
Leading the PPA market
The Iberdrola Group, of which Iberdrola España forms part, manages long-term Power Purchase Agreements in markets such as Spain, Europe, the United Kingdom, the United States, Brazil, Mexico and Australia, from onshore wind, offshore wind and photovoltaic projects.
The group began developing such agreements over a decade ago and Iberdrola is now the leader in the ranking of PPAs in Europe in 2023, according to the consultancy Pexapark. Iberdrola has around 90% of the energy sold that it plans to generate between 2024 and 2025, giving the company visibility in delivering sustainable energy in the long term.
