Iberdrola España and the Cariñena D.O. promote the installation of a solar community
-
The president of the Cariñena D.O., Antonio Ubide; the mayor of the town, Sergio Ortiz, and the Iberdrola España sales representative in Aragón, Luis Artigas, visited the photovoltaic plant located on the roof of the Wine Museum.
The infrastructure will enable more than 120 families in the area to access the 100% sustainable energy generated and benefit from the advantages of self-consumption, without the need to have their own installation or make investments.
This photovoltaic installation will prevent the emission of around 525 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere over the next 30 years
The Cariñena Designation of Origin and Iberdrola España have promoted a solar community on the roof of the Wine Museum and headquarters of the Control Board, located on Camino de la Platera street. This project will allow the D.O. and dozens of neighbors to enjoy the advantages of renewable self-consumption, without the need to have their own installation or make any kind of investment, since Iberdrola España is the one who carries it out.
The president of the Cariñena Designation of Origin, Antonio Ubide, and the mayor of Cariñena, Sergio Ortiz, visited the installation this morning, accompanied by the commercial delegate of Iberdrola España in Aragón, Luis Artigas, who explained how the solar community works.
This form of community self-consumption allows users to access 100% renewable energy generated from the roof of the building, where 180 panels have been installed with a total power of 83 kilowatts (kW), enough to produce 103 MWh annually. These photovoltaic installations will prevent the emission of around 525 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere over the next 30 years.
Thanks to this solar community, more than 120 neighbors within a radius of approximately two kilometers are participating by subscribing to it and saving on their electricity bills by consuming locally part of the energy produced by this installation. For its part, the Cariñena D.O. Regulatory Council will be able to cover up to 40% of its electricity consumption.
Antonio Ubide: "We are moving in the direction of sustainable development"
Antonio Ubide, president of the Cariñena Designation of Origin, has positively valued "the creation of a solar community that will benefit 120 families and the Control Board itself with a lower consumption of electricity and above all with the environmental improvement and energy efficiency that it implies; some wineries are also promoting the implementation of solar systems on their roofs, and from our Designation of Origin we are moving in the line of a more sustainable development".
Sergio Ortiz stressed after the visit that "from the City Council of Cariñena we applaud the initiative of the Control Board and Iberdrola España" and noted that the Consistory is also promoting a similar initiative in municipal roofs, taking advantage of the old facilities of Bodegas San Valero, acquired to adapt an area for festivities and municipal warehouses.
Luis Artigas, Commercial Delegate of Iberdrola Spain in Aragón, highlights that this project "which we amicably call La luz que nace del Museo, allows us to continue advancing in the supply of zero kilometer renewable energy, produced in Cariñena to be consumed by the people of Cariñena, with an innovative solution that will help local families to boost sustainability by saving on their bills".
Users can calculate the economic and environmental savings and join the solar community through Solar Communities - Iberdrola.
Boosting self-consumption
In addition, as a result of its commitment to self-consumption, Iberdrola España has improved the remuneration of its customers' surpluses and thanks to innovation in energy products, self-consumers with Iberdrola España plans can value their surpluses beyond the energy term, making it possible to have a bill of zero euros and now also benefit from the value of the surpluses in another home of the same owner.
Iberdrola España leads the photovoltaic self-consumption market in Spain, managing 40% of the country's self-consumption customers. As part of its commitment to accelerating the energy transition and developing new products to improve efficiency and energy savings, in 2015 the company became the first company in its sector to integrate self-consumption solutions into its service offering.
The company has consolidated its position as the benchmark company in self-consumption and, through Smart Solar, offers services for all types of customers, from domestic consumers to large industrial customers.
The collective self-consumption solutions developed by Iberdrola España have made self-consumption available to any customer, whether or not they have their own roof. Customers in this segment also benefit from the Solar Plan, a competitive electricity tariff during the hours when there is no sun, which is when they need to consume energy from the grid, since during the day they are self-supplied from their own installation.
Self-consumption solar systems can save 30% on the annual bill in the case of neighborhood communities; 50% for companies and businesses; and up to 70% in single-family homes. This saving is produced by a triple way: the energy produced by the installation that the user does not have to buy, the compensation for the surplus of energy not consumed that is discharged to the grid and the saving due to lower taxes.
