Iberdrola España fills the courtyard of the Aguas Nuevas Albacete vocational school with energy with the donation of a nacelle from the Molar del Molinar park

  • The students of the Renewable Energies module will be able to do real maintenance practice on the nacelle of the donated wind turbine, which is more than 6.3 metres long, 2.25 and 2.90 metres wide and high and weighs 20.4 tons
  • This reuse contributes to the recycling and circular economy process initiated by Iberdrola España in the dismantling of the 139 wind turbines at the Isabela and Molar wind farms in Albacete, for their repowering, replacing them with just 22 more efficient and cleaner energy generating turbines

Presentation with the Regional Minister for Education on the Iberdrola España wind turbine at CIFP Aguas Nuevas

Iberdrola España has donated to Aguas Nuevas Albacete vocational school a nacelle of one of the wind turbines dismantled in the repowering of the company wind farms in Molar del Molinar, Albacete.

The nacelle is the box or casing – 6.3 metres long, 2.25 and 2.90 metres wide and high and weighing 20.4 tonnes – that sits on top of the wind turbine towers, just behind the blades. This wind turbine was a Gamesa Eólica G47 with an installed capacity of 660kW, a rotor diameter of 47 metres and a tower height of 45 metres.

In addition to learning about all the essential mechanical and electronic components of the nacelle, the students of the Renewable Energies module at the vocational school in Albacete will be able to do real-life predictive and connective maintenance on a real wind turbine, to improve their practical training before they join the labour market.

The event was attended by the regional minister for Education, Culture and Sport, Amador Pastor Moheda, and the head of Iberdrola Renovables in Castilla-La Mancha, Amelia Rodríguez and Juan Antonio García Cuenca, and the school's director, Juan José González Cifuentes, among other officials and authorities.

The Iberdrola España nacelle will become part of the image of this advanced vocational training centre with more than 500 students, having been installed in one of the courtyards next to the workshops of the energy and water training module.

Iberdrola España is applying a circular economy model in the repowering of the Isabela and Molar de Molinar wind farms (Albacete), with a very clear focus on reuse and recycling, especially of the blades and other materials from the original wind farm, in this specific case linked to improving vocational training.

Blade recycling and waste management in Spain

Iberdrola España has awarded the joint venture EnergyLoop the contract to dismantle and recycle 139 wind turbines, which will be replaced by just 22 with higher efficiency and energy generation, totalling more than 800 t of material. This company, with a plant in Cortes, Navarra, began operations in 2025.

Iberdrola España's goal is to recycle at least 50% by weight of blades by 2025, and to reach 100% by 2030, in line with its Circular Economy Plan.

In this process, the glass and carbon fibres are separated for reuse, or crushed for use in cement, roads or on-street furnishings. The resins can even be used as biomass energy. By recycling the structure, thousands of tonnes of waste are avoided, and a more sustainable model with less dependence on new raw materials is promoted. This project has received €22.7M in subsidies from the Energy Savings and Diversification Institute/Next Generation, and is funded by the Circular Repowering programme out of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO).
