The San Esteban hydroelectric power station, owned by Iberdrola España, opened its doors this week to around twenty engineering students from the Marín Naval Academy. Located in the municipality of Nogueira de Ramuín, Ourense, since the 1950s the dam has represented one of the company’s biggest investments in hydroelectric and renewable energy. The company has been actively working with the Spanish Navy for years.

During their tour, the students were accompanied by Iberdrola España's Institutional Delegate in Galicia, Francisco Silva and the Head of Sil-Támega Operation and Management, Francisco Basanta, as well as by their professors Laura Febrero, Fluid Mechanics teacher, and José Antonio González, Electrical Engineering 101 teacher.

The students learned first-hand about facility operation and their contribution to renewable energy generation. In addition to accessing the interior and touring the cavern, the visit ended with a climb to the crest of the dam.

The reservoir's spectacular location gives it great potential in terms of natural resources. The complex of San Esteban, located in the Sil basin, makes the best use of rainwater to generate clean and renewable energy. This is achieved through the operation of four main sets formed by vertical axis Francis turbines with 66 MW of power each.
