Iberdrola España reaffirms its strong commitment to environmental protection and biodiversity

Renovation works on the Valdemoreno bridge, located downstream of the Valdecañas dam in Extremadura and being carried out by Iberdrola España, have been temporarily suspended following the detection of a protected colony of common house martins beneath the structure. The works will resume once the species’ breeding season has concluded.

The decision was taken after technical teams identified 96 nests of common house martins (Delichon urbicum) on the underside of the bridge. Technical reports concluded that continuing the planned works would pose a direct risk to the colony during the nesting period. The suspension has therefore been implemented in compliance with wildlife protection regulations.

Through this action, the company reaffirms its strong commitment to environmental protection and biodiversity, integrating sustainability into its business strategy through initiatives such as its Convive programme, aimed at protecting local flora and fauna.

The works, promoted by Iberdrola España as the infrastructure’s owner, involve the complete replacement of the bridge deck and were originally scheduled for completion on 30 October. The timeline had been designed to align construction with river flow conditions and to minimise disruption for regular users of the route.

In parallel with the suspension, the condition of the bridge has been assessed following the initial works already carried out. Technical analyses confirm that the structure meets all required safety standards, allowing for its provisional reopening to traffic. The bridge is currently operating with a single lane on a temporary basis, pending the resumption of works once the breeding season has ended and all conditions for safe execution are met.

Iberdrola España has also launched an information campaign aimed at local residents, businesses and public authorities to communicate the current status of the bridge and the expected timeline for the resumption of works.
