Herrera de Valdecañas distribution transformer substation in Palencia, Castile and León

I-DE, Iberdrola España's distribution company, completed the project to compact the Herrera de Valdecañas distribution transformer substation located in the province of Palencia. This substation helps maintain supply quality for around 3,200 customers in the municipality that gives the facility its name, as well as in neighbouring towns such as Astudillo, Cordovilla la Real, Hornillos de Cerrato, Palenzuela, Quintana del Puente, Tabanera de Cerrato, Torquemada, Valbuena de Pisuerga, Valdecañas de Cerrato, Valdeolmillos, Villahan, Villalaco and Villamediana, many of whom are in the primary sector, particularly farming, livestock and agriculture.

This project, which was carried out over the last twelve months and involved an investment of €2.25M, has had a significant regional component, with the participation of the Salamanca-based company Surya and the Valladolid branches of Ormazabal and Ferrovial Energía, revitalising the economy and creating jobs in Castile and León.

The company compacted the 45 kilovolt (kV) high-voltage and 13 kV medium-voltage systems, which are now located inside prefabricated buildings and the high- and medium-voltage line outputs were buried underground, reducing their visual impact. The power transformer was also replaced.

Iberdrola España's distribution company also reduced maintenance work and, thanks to the new integrated protection and control system, will make the facility more reliable, meeting advanced quality and environmental criteria. All this work carried out in the province of León improves the safety of operating and maintenance personnel and increases the service quality.

The project was carried out without affecting normal electricity supply to customers while work was being done on the electrical infrastructure.

More than 246 substations in Castile and León

In Castile and León, i-DE manages more than 50,000 km of power lines, has 15,697 transformer stations in service and 246 substations.

In recent years, the company has undertaken an ambitious plan to digitise its electricity grids, converting its more than 1.5 million meters in the region and the infrastructure that supports them into smart meters, incorporating remote management, monitoring and automation capabilities. The digitisation of the electricity grid will provide more information to implement additional energy efficiency and sustainability measures, in line with our commitment to ambitious and urgent climate action.

Investment and development in electricity grids, the backbone of the energy transition, are a tool for attracting industry and creating jobs.
