Plan to renovate electrical infrastructure in Cartagena, Murcia

Iberdrola España, through its distribution company i-DE, has invested more than €700,000 during the first half of the year with different interventions to improve electricity supply in La Manga and Cabo de Palos, in the Murcia Region.

The company, which has held various working meetings with the Cartagena City Council, has carried out work to update and improve the distribution network in different areas frequented by tourists in town.

This week, work was completed on the refurbishment and inclusion of automation systems at the Galupe transformer station, located next to the Peke Park in La Manga, and work continues in the Barracones area in Cabo de Palos.

In addition to these works, five other transformer stations have also undergone interventions to improve control of the medium voltage network with the installation of technology that allows remote manoeuvres to be carried out without personnel needing to travel.

Generators have been installed to improve the i-DE grid’s installations, which has made it possible to minimise supply interruptions to neighbouring users.

In addition to this work, more than one kilometre of overhead power lines and the corresponding 16 pylons have been buried in the area around the Salinas de Marchamalo, a protected landscape of the Mar Menor.

To continue supplying customers, a new underground medium-voltage line approximately 2.5 kilometres long is being built, which will connect several transformer stations in the area.

A new switching centre will also be built, which will be fitted with advanced automation systems, enabling better integration of the new facilities into the distribution grid and better response times in the event that manoeuvring is required to resolve incidents or manage maintenance work.

Renovating and building electrical installations will reduce visual impact and continue to improve the quality of the electricity supply in the area. Work is expected to be completed before the summer and the current overhead line can be dismantled.

A similar investment, approximately €800,000, is planned for September for further work to update and improve the electricity grid in different parts of the municipality.

Network facilitating electrification in the Region of Murcia

The company is working to improve infrastructures and is carrying out an ambitious plan to digitalise the grids to enable automated processes that improve the service provided. The aim is to provide a supply grid that facilitates electrification, enabling customer installations, whether private or business, to connect to the grid and move towards a more sustainable, competitive and resilient economy.

In the Murcia Region, i-DE manages more than 30,000 km of power lines, has 9,700 transformation centres in service and more than 70 substations. The company maintains a high level of service quality in the region for both private and business customers and is constantly working to improve infrastructures.
