The new Fuenteguinaldo electricity substation in Castilla and León improves reliability and minimises visual impact
- The development of this downsizing project leveraged heavily on local support with the participation of the Salamanca companies Tecinsa and Surya, the Leonese company Marval Seguridad Integral and the Valladolid office of Zantza Seguridad, to revitalise the economy and create jobs in Castilla and León
- This infrastructure helps to maintain supply quality levels for more than 4,300 customers, most of them in the primary sector with agricultural and livestock farms

I-DE, Iberdrola's distribution company in Spain, has completed the compacting project at the Fuenteguinaldo distribution transformer substation in the province of Salamanca, which helps to maintain supply quality levels for more than 4,300 customers in the municipality of the same name, as well as in neighbouring towns such as Sahugo, Herguijuela, Martiago, El Bodón, La Encina, Robleda, Villasrubias, Peñaparda, Navasfrías, El Payo and Casillas de Flores, many of them customers in the primary sector, agricultural and livestock farms.
This intervention, which took six months to complete and involved an investment of €1.8 M, has leveraged on the region’s expertise, with the help of Salamanca companies Tecinsa and Surya, the Leonese company Marval Seguridad Integral and the Valladolid office of Zantza Seguridad, contributing to revitalising the economy and creating jobs in the Community of Castile and Leon.
The company compacted the cells, which are now located inside prefabricated buildings, and the medium-voltage line outlets were buried underground, reducing their visual impact and making the installation more reliable, meeting advanced quality and environmental criteria. In addition, the installation was equipped with a new high-voltage position for the CHD and the power transformer was replaced.
The generation connected to this infrastructure, mostly photovoltaic, provides essential support during periods of high demand on a sunny day, a clear example of sustainable and environmentally friendly production.
More than 246 substations in the community
In Castilla and León, i-DE manages more than 50,000 km of power lines, has 15,697 transformer stations in service and 246 substations.
In recent years, the company has undertaken an ambitious plan to digitise its electricity grids, where it has converted its more than 1.5 M meters in the region and the infrastructure that supports them into smart meters, incorporating remote management, supervision and automation capabilities. The digitisation of the electricity distribution grid will produce more information to implement additional energy efficiency and sustainability measures in a way that is committed to ambitious and urgent climate action.
