Iberdrola España begins removal of eight large electricity pylons in Los Rectores and Costera Norte in Murcia
- The Mayor of Murcia, Rebeca Pérez, joins representatives of Iberdrola España at the start of a project that responds to a long-standing request from local residents and brings to a close years of work and collaboration to move these infrastructures underground.
- The work will enable the removal of nearly four kilometres of overhead electricity conductors and eight large metal pylons that impact both the residential area of Los Rectores and several points along Costera Norte.
- The pylons will be removed between 18 and 22 August, with dismantling of the pylons due to begin the following week. All work is expected to be completed by the end of the month.

The removal of the overhead electricity lines in Los Rectores and Costera Norte began this Tuesday in the presence of the Mayor of Murcia, Rebeca Pérez; the Murcia Area Manager of i-DE Redes Eléctricas Inteligentes, Ángel Joaquín Pallares; and Iberdrola España’s Institutional Delegate in the Murcia region, Miguel Ángel Cerdán.
The project, promoted, financed and carried out by i-DE, Iberdrola España’s distribution company, completes the process of placing this infrastructure underground and will enable approximately four kilometres of overhead electricity conductors and eight large metal pylons to be removed.
The project will have a particular impact in Los Rectores, where this infrastructure runs through a major residential area, and along Costera Norte, one of Murcia’s main growth corridors. On Costera Norte, some of the large pylons restrict the width of the carriageway, causing the three-lane road to narrow at several points.
Four kilometres of conductors and eight large pylons
Work began on Tuesday, 18 August, with the dismantling of overhead conductors along the section of Costera Norte opposite the Myrtea shopping centre. The gradual removal of nearly four kilometres of conductors will continue until 22 August, with dismantling of the eight metal pylons due to begin the following week.
The foundations will then be demolished, auxiliary elements removed and the affected land restored. The project will conclude with the restoration and cleaning of the areas previously occupied by this infrastructure. All work is expected to be completed by the end of August.
Removing the pylons, foundations and associated easements will free up land currently constrained by the electricity infrastructure and improve its integration into the urban environment and landscape.
The project completes a process that has required preliminary work to make it possible to place the lines underground, including civil works carried out by Murcia City Council to accommodate the new electricity infrastructure. The function of the overhead lines has already been transferred to the underground infrastructure, meaning that they can be dismantled without affecting the operation of the grid or the electricity supply.
For his part, Ángel Joaquín Pallares, Head of the Murcia Area at i-DE Redes Eléctricas Inteligentes, said: “This project represents a transformative initiative for Murcia, as it completes the removal of extra-high-voltage overhead infrastructure from an area that is strategic to the city’s development. The removal of towers and cables will free up urban space, improve the landscape of the Costera Norte area and strengthen the integration of energy infrastructure with the municipality’s sustainable growth through electrification.”
The work requires coordination between Murcia City Council, i-DE Redes Eléctricas Inteligentes, the Local Police, the Traffic Department, Tranvía de Murcia, Terra Natura and the private Espinardo-Pólvoras line to ensure that the different stages of dismantling are carried out under the necessary safety conditions.
