Smart Grids Academy (SGA) today presented four training programmes to train professionals to face the technological challenges of smart grids in the areas of: Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, Smart Industry and Smart Grids. These courses are aimed at professionals in the energy industry and smart grid suppliers, and are available throughout Spain, with plans to internationalise the project in the future.
This initiative is promoted by the GAIA Cluster, the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, and i-DE Redes Eléctricas Inteligentes, Iberdrola España's distribution company. The presentation of the syllabuses, held this morning in Bilbao, was opened by Ainara Basurko, Deputy for Economic Promotion of the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, who highlighted the importance of the Smart Grids Academy as part of the ‘Bizkaia with the Talent’ strategy and its contribution to the training of highly qualified professionals in smart grids.
Asís Canales, Director of People and Services at Iberdrola Group and institutional representative for Iberdrola España in the Basque Country, also spoke, emphasising that technology, talent and incentive-based regulatory frameworks are the basic pillars for responding to the challenges facing the power industry. ‘The Smart Grid Academy and Global Smart Grid Innovation hub were created to respond to the needs for tech and talent. We also need to respond appropriately to regulation’, he added.
Training plans in electricity grids
The training programmes were designed with the participation of more than 20 companies and organisations linked to energy, which have contributed their experience in the design and validation of the content. As a result, the programmes, which start in January 2026, have been tested in the professional field, ensuring that the knowledge acquired is relevant and applicable.
Offered online with in-person laboratory sessions at Iberdrola's Global Smart Grids Innovation Hub in Bilbao, the training courses can be taken in their entirety or in individual modules, allowing professionals to tailor the training to their specific needs. Upon completion of the course, participants will receive an official certification from the Smart Grids Academy.
The four itineraries designed each last 240 hours. In addition to the entities promoting SGA, organisations such as Tecnalia, Ikerlan, Arteche, ZIV, Ingeteam, RDT Axia Learning, All About Data/Innova, the University of the Basque Country (EHU), the University of Deusto, the University of Alcalá and the University of Comillas have actively worked on in its design.

Information and registration
To complement these itineraries, Smart Grids Academy will offer up to eight masterclasses per year, which will be open to anyone interested in exploring specific topics related to smart grids in more depth.
