Iberdrola España hits 25 solar communities in La Rioja and thus provides more than 4,500 families in La Rioja with access to self-consumption. In 2015, the company was a pioneer in offering self-consumption to its customers. As more than two-thirds of the country’s population lives in high-rise buildings, in 2019, it launched its solar communities, a solution that allows any person within 2 km of an installation to access 100% renewable energy.

At present, more than 73,000 people in La Rioja live within the scope of an Iberdrola España solar community, which are located on the roofs of different types of buildings such as churches, schools, industrial buildings and shopping centres.

These installations, with a total power of 2,500 kWp, are in thirteen municipalities in La Rioja: Lardero, Haro, Logroño, Nájera, Arenzana de Arriba, Villamediana de Iregua, Calahorra, Arnedo, Alfaro, Santo Domingo de la Calzada, Rincón de Soto, Autol and Pradejón.

According to Eduardo Lobato, Iberdrola España's sales representative in the region, these projects ‘reflect the company's commitment to local, sustainable and innovative actions in the community, so it can supply its customers with local energy’.

Iberdrola España's solar communities allow you to enjoy all the benefits of solar energy, without the need to have photovoltaic panels on your own roofs or rooftops, or to have to make any investment. The company takes care of the installation and of finding the best location.

The more than 1,000 solar communities commissioned by Iberdrola España in Spain enable more than 100,000 families to save up to 30% on their electricity bills, something that only makes the benefit of reducing dependence on fossil fuels even better. Each solar community will prevent the release of around 640 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere over the next 30 years, improving the air quality of the places where they are installed.

Leader in self-consumption in Spain

As part of its commitment to accelerating the energy transition, Iberdrola España leads the self-consumption market in Spain. The company’s customers in this scheme benefit from the Solar Plan, a competitive electricity tariff for the hours when there is no sunlight, a time when energy from the grid is needed as the installation provides energy during the day.

Self-consumption solar systems can lead to savings of up to 30% on the annual electricity bill for community buildings, 50% for businesses, and up to 70% for single-family homes. This saving comes through three channels: the energy produced by the installation that the user does not have to purchase, compensation for any excess energy not consumed that is fed into the grid, and savings from reduced taxes.

Iberdrola España allows unused energy to be fed back into the grid in exchange for compensation through the Solar Cloud service, or even directed for use at another property.
