Project NOON and renewable hydrogen

What Project NOON is and how it is driving renewable hydrogen (RFNBO) for Spanish industry

Project NOON is an initiative funded by the European Union under the second 2024 Innovation Fund call (auction-based projects for the production of RFNBO hydrogen).

The NOON Project aims to play a key role in accelerating the transition to climate neutrality.

Iberdrola España is driving the decarbonisation of industry through RFNBO (Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin) hydrogen production projects using 100% renewable electricity, aimed at replacing fossil fuel inputs. These initiatives combine integration with renewable assets, flexible operation and long-term business models to provide security of supply, emissions reductions and competitiveness to energy-intensive sectors. In line with the strategy of the Iberdrola Group, of which Iberdrola España is a part, the company remains committed to the roll-out of industrial-scale renewable hydrogen projects in Europe, strengthening local value chains and accelerating the transition towards a more sustainable and resilient future.

What is Project NOON?

Through Project NOON, Iberdrola España aims to continue driving domestic hydrogen production – the company currently owns and operates plants in Puertollano, Barcelona and Benicarló and is jointly constructing a 25 MW plant in Castellón with BP – and to strengthen its global leadership position in energy transition and sustainability.

As part of this commitment to industrial decarbonisation, Project NOON has been launched, led by Iberdrola Clientes, a company within Iberdrola España, and selected for funding by the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA), with the Grant Agreement signed in December 2025. The amount awarded under the Innovation Fund totalled €135.5m, representing a key and necessary step for the development of the project.

Project NOON aims to play a critical role in accelerating the transition to climate neutrality, while also promoting broad social and economic progress.

Objective of Project NOON

Project NOON envisages the installation of an RFNBO hydrogen plant to produce 161,000 tonnes of the gas during the first 10 years of operation. The project is expected to avoid the emission of 1.1 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent over 10 years.

The project will enable the implementation and operation of an RFNBO hydrogen production plant with an electrolysis capacity of 120 MW.

The RFNBO hydrogen production plant will be powered entirely by electricity from renewable sources (both existing and newly built) owned by the Iberdrola Group, of which Iberdrola España is a part, and local water.
