Iberdrola España and the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) joined forces once again for the second Bilbao Walk Against Cancer, a charity event aimed at supporting cancer.

More than 1,600 people gathered this morning at the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao before setting off on a walk through the city centre in a show of solidarity with people affected by cancer.

Ahead of the start of the sport event, the president of the Association Against Cancer in Bizkaia, Mila Gullón, thanked participants, volunteers, partner organisations, institutions, sponsors, content creators and the media for helping make the second edition of the walk possible. The initiative was led by Iberdrola España, with the support of El Correo, Lagun Aro, CIC bioGUNE, Idom and Solán de Cabras, in collaboration with the BBK Banking Foundation and Eroski, and with institutional backing from Bilbao City Council.

The event was officially opened by Mila Gullón, accompanied by the Mayor of Bilbao, Juan María Aburto; the Basque Government’s Minister for Welfare, Youth and Demographic Challenges, Nerea Melgosa; and Bizkaia Provincial Councillor for Social Action, Amaia Antxustegi, together with representatives from Iberdrola España, Osakidetza, the University of the Basque Country (EHU) and several research centres across Bizkaia. Representing Iberdrola España was Eduardo Lobato, Northern Sales Manager.

Participants then set off on the approximately four-kilometre route, which began and ended at the Guggenheim Museum. As in previous editions, the event sought to encourage healthy habits while raising awareness of prostate cancer. Throughout the morning, visitors were able to take part in a wide range of activities, including research workshops for children, information sessions on the most common cancers affecting men, and guided visits to the exhibition Connecting Lives: A Challenge in Cancer Research to Achieve a Survival Rate Above 70%, led by cancer specialists.

Attendees also had the opportunity to take photographs at themed photocall areas and commemorative podiums. Thanks to the collaboration of Iberdrola España, younger participants enjoyed a dedicated games and prizes area, while a message board allowed visitors to leave words of encouragement for people undergoing cancer treatment.

The event was hosted by Jabi Onaindia, director of Radio Popular and Bizkaia Irratia and one of Bizkaia’s best-known journalists, who guided the programme and spoke with participants and representatives of the organisations gathered at the Guggenheim Museum esplanade throughout the morning.
