Iberdrola España completes the electrification of the Port of Pasaia with the installation of an electrical supply infrastructure for ships

The company has completed the installation of an OPS connection point to supply renewable energy to ships docked at the port.
The shipping company UECC will be the first to benefit from the system, which helps reduce the environmental and noise impact of port operations.
The initiative has received support from the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility (MITMS) through the Sustainable and Digital Transport Support Program and as part of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, funded by the European Union's Next Generation funds.

Iberdrola España has completed the project to electrify the Pasaia port ecosystem with the implementation of the innovative Onshore Power Supply (OPS) infrastructure. The system allows ships docked at the port to connect to the onshore grid during their stay, draw power from renewable energy and reduce their levels of air and noise pollution.

The connection point installed at the Kaputxinos pier in the Guipúzcoa port will serve the hybrid Ro-Ro vessels operated by the shipping company UECC, which transport wheeled vehicles and constitute one of the port’s main traffic streams.

"Having this infrastructure in place will make it possible to substantially reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality in the port area. Through initiatives like this, we aim to establish Pasaia as an eco-sustainable port committed to decarbonizing its operations", notes Izaskun Goñi, president of the Pasaia Port Authority (APP).

Eduardo Lobato, Iberdrola España's commercial representative in the Basque Country, has pointed out that the electrification of ports will be key to the energy transition in maritime transport: It enables more efficient, cleaner and autonomous energy management.

According to estimates by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) the use of these OPS technologies also reduces noise impact by up to 16 decibels, completely eliminating the noise produced by auxiliary engines, which until now were used to keep all ship equipment running during loading and unloading operations, thereby improving the quality of life for residents living near the port.

In short the advantages of this system include savings compared to traditional fuels, a reduction in local emissions released into the atmosphere, a reduction in vibrations and noise produced during docking as well as less wear and tear on auxiliary engines.

Next Generation Funds

Iberdrola España's initiative "Deployment of Onshore Power Supply (OPS) Technology and Decarbonization of the Electricity Supply in the Ports of Pasaia, Vigo, and Alicante" has received support from the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility (MITMS) through the Sustainable and Digital Transport Support Program under the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan, funded by the European Union's Next Generation Funds. The MITMS selected the project to receive a grant of €1.9 million.
