A group of students from the Vasco de la Zarza Secondary School has visited the Ávila transformer substation belonging to i-DE, Iberdrola España's distribution company, located in Ávila.

The Ávila substation, which belongs to the transmission and distribution network, has four transformers, two of 63 MVA and two of 40 MVA, which transform very high voltage (132 kV) into high voltage (45 kV) and medium voltage (15 kV). With a total of six high-voltage lines and 16 medium-voltage lines, it supplies electricity to a large part of the province of Ávila.

During the visit the students took part in a training session given by Federico Benito de los Mozos, a substation maintenance technician, who explained how the different pieces of equipment in the substation work – auxiliary services, control, protection and transformers – as well as addressing aspects related to maintenance and care for the environment.

Afterwards Noemí Valiente, head of the Ávila Sector, gave a talk on the different types of facilities that i-DE operates in the province. In this talk she analysed the importance of electrical networks in the development of the territory, not only for the industrial sector, but also for sectors such as self-consumption and electric vehicles. Likewise Ciriaco García, a prevention technician, showed the students the key criteria in electrical risk prevention, delving into key aspects such as the effects of current on the human body.

The Ávila substation guarantees the electricity supply to more than 82,000 customers in the capital and its surroundings, both in urban and rural areas, and supports the main industries and strategic centres of the Ávila business fabric.

The aim of the visit was to give the students a technical overview of a substation as well as a nearby transformer station and to learn about the maintenance and safety operations and work organisation of Iberdrola España's distribution company with the aim of promoting and raising awareness of the company's activities among future professionals in the sector. They also received technical training on electrical risk prevention.
