Iberdrola España and the Community of Madrid inaugurate Madrid's largest fast-charging electric car park

  • It has 47 charging stations, 15 of which can charge the battery 80% in under fifteen minutes or 200 km of range in just five minutes
  • Due to its location, it will also serve cities such as Getafe, Fuenlabrada, Alcorcón and the population of Leganés itself (750,000 people)

Iberdrola España and the Community of Madrid are strength their commitment to electric mobility with the commissioning of one of the largest charging stations in Spain and the largest in Madrid in fast charging stations for electric vehicles in Leganés. The station has 15 points out of a total of 47 that can charge the battery 80% in under 15 minutes or to reach a range of 200 kilometres after only five minutes of being plugged in. There are also 10 fast charging points to charge in half an hour, complemented by 22 semi-fast charging points.

Iberdrola España installed the charging points and will be in charge of the station’s operation and maintenance. The installation has 47 electric charging parking spaces, all equipped with solar panels to maximise the installation’s energy efficiency and to supply up to 100 families or businesses with nearby renewable energy, while saving on their electricity bill.

There will be eight 350kW and seven 240kW (ultra-fast) spaces; another ten spaces will offer 60kW (fast) and 22 will have 22kW (semi-fast). As it is located next to the Parque Polvoranca, Leganés commuter train station, users will be able to choose the type of charging depending on how long they’ll be parked there.

The project is part of the programme of incentives for singular projects in electric mobility (MOVES Singular Projects II Programme), within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, financed by the European Union through the Institute for Energy Diversification and Savings (IDAE).

The Regional Minister of the Presidency, Justice and Local Administration, Miguel Ángel García Martín, inaugurated this new centre, together with representatives from Iberdrola España and members of the Leganes municipal corporation.

García Martín said that ‘this electric car park adds to the one already in Pozuelo de Alarcón and the one recently announced by the president on Paseo de la Castellana, which consolidates the leadership that the Community of Madrid has in Spain in sustainable mobility’. ‘This is a major step for Leganés, as well as a success and a source of pride for the region’, he stressed.

Antonio Armengot, Iberdrola Clientes representative in Madrid, stated that ‘electric mobility requires public–private partnerships to advance in residents’ well-being and contribute to improving air quality in cities and their sustainable development. At Iberdrola España we were pioneers in our commitment to electric mobility and today we are leaders in public charging with more than 9,500 points in operation located on major roads and cities, as well as in small towns and back roads’

The Mayor of Leganés, Miguel Ángel Recuenco, expressed his satisfaction that ‘new investments are coming to the city and if they’re sustainable from an economic, environmental and social point of view, even better. And the installation of this electric charging station meets all these requirements easily. Besides encouraging sustainable mobility with the charging points for electric vehicles, it also has a solar photovoltaic system that will enable families in the surrounding area to benefit from and save on their electricity bills by consuming this energy without the need for their own installation or investment’.

The Leganés electric charging station is the second charging hub on public land that the public company Planifica Madrid, which Iberdrola España is going to operate on a leasehold basis. Located in an amazing location with an area of influence of 750,000 inhabitants, between the cities of Leganés, Getafe, Fuenlabrada and Alcorcón, the Parque Polvoranca train station and the presence nearby of the M-406 (north), M-407 (west), M-409 (east) and M-50 (south) motorways, it will serve the residents of Madrid as well as travellers and visitors.

The station has a surface area of 1,260 square metres and a buildable area of 1,238 square metres for tertiary and service use. It belongs to the PAU (Programa de Actuación Urbanística or Urban Intervention Programme) of Arroyo Culebro, an eminently and already consolidated residential area, with more than 3,600 homes and adjacent to the M-50 motorway.

The Electromobility Barometer published by ANFAC (Spanish Association of Automobile and Truck Manufacturers) for the fourth quarter of 2024, showed that the number of public access charging points increased by 32% during 2024, with 9,424 points more than the previous year, reaching a total of 38,725 operational points. Madrid leads the country in electrification, with a total of 35.3 points out of 100, well above the national average (21.4).

Pioneer and leader in mobility

With more than 9,500 public charging points with a 100% renewable origin guarantee, Iberdrola España's electric mobility network is the most extensive in Spain. In total, in public and private charging points, the company's network exceeds 45,000 chargers.

The mobility plan, launched by the company in 2016, was a pioneer in its implementation. Its public infrastructure design is being rolled out on highways and corridors as well as in cities and small towns with the goal of having at least one fast charging station every 50 km or less.
