Iberdrola España's networks will enable electric vehicles to travel 500 million kilometres by 2026
- The company will exceed four million recharges this year and already has 12,000 operational charging points, the most extensive network in the country
- These networks save 30 million litres of petrol and prevent the emission of around 69,300 tonnes of CO₂
Iberdrola España continues to strengthen the infrastructure that enables the expansion of electric mobility in Spain. The company currently has 12,000 operational charging points across its own network and the high-power network resulting from its partnership with bp pulse, having added 2,000 new points in the last 12 months and more than 4,300 in the last two years.
This roll-out is helping to ensure that long-distance journeys in electric vehicles are no longer just a promise but are becoming an everyday reality. The rapid growth of the electric vehicle fleet in Spain together with the roll-out of an increasingly extensive and powerful charging infrastructure is enabling thousands of drivers to make journeys of hundreds of kilometres easily, efficiently and economically.
Usage of this network is also experiencing strong growth. Iberdrola España forecasts 4.1 million recharges in 2026, compared with 2.6 million in 2025 and 1.7 million in 2024, representing an increase of approximately 60% on last year and 140% on two years ago.
There are currently around 950,000 electric vehicles on the road in Spain, whilst by 2026 plug-in electric vehicles will account for 21.1% of new light vehicle registrations. The trend continues to accelerate and last August an all-time record was set: almost one in three new cars purchased by private individuals was electric, accounting for 30.7% of the total.
Enough energy to travel 500 million kilometres with Iberdrola España
The expansion of electric mobility is also reflected in the energy supplied via the public charging network. In 2026, Iberdrola España will provide enough energy to cover 500 million kilometres.
This figure is equivalent to all the electric vehicles currently on Spanish roads being able to travel more than 500 kilometres each – an indicator that demonstrates the maturity achieved by the charging infrastructure and its capacity to respond to market growth.
Iberdrola España's electric mobility network also has 600,000 registered users on its app, meaning that approximately two in every three electric vehicle drivers in Spain use its services. Of these, it is estimated that 350,000 unique users will carry out an average of 12 top-ups per year, equivalent to one top-up per month per user.
The networks' capacity meets the needs of both everyday mobility and long-distance journeys. While the average charge provided by the networks allows a range of around 150 kilometres, at the high-power charging points typically used during journeys the range regained amounts to between 250 and 300 kilometres per session.
Thanks to its combination of high- and low-power charging points distributed throughout the country, Iberdrola España has the most extensive charging network in the country, with sufficient capacity to serve more than 1.5 million electric vehicles, covering all their out-of-home charging needs.
Electrification means savings
As well as making travel easier, electric mobility offers significant financial benefits for users.
Drivers who regularly charge their vehicles at home can reduce their energy costs by more than 90% compared with a petrol-powered vehicle, without being affected by market volatility or the international economic climate. With Iberdrola España's tariffs, it is possible to travel 100 kilometres for approximately €1, compared with the more than €12 that the same journey would currently cost using conventional fuel.
Even when using the public charging network, electric vehicles continue to offer significant financial benefits. Users can save more than 50% by using low-power charging points and over 20% on high-power charges, a figure that increases thanks to the promotions and benefits available to Iberdrola España customers.
On long-distance journeys the difference remains significant. A 400-kilometre journey in an electric vehicle, setting off from home with a fully charged battery, can cost around €11, compared to €51 for a petrol-powered vehicle — representing a saving of nearly 80%. Even without the option of home charging, the saving exceeds 30%.
Market developments, growing adoption by drivers and the roll-out of charging infrastructure show that electric mobility has entered a new phase of maturity. Today, travelling long distances in an electric vehicle is not only possible, but is becoming increasingly convenient, accessible and cost-effective for a growing number of drivers.
